Council Tax Help!!!!

My husband received a letter from an old council stating that he still owed the council taxfroma previous address. They sent along a form with it asking about our income and expenditure and how much we would offer to pay. We filled this in and sent it back stating that at the moment we could only afford £5.00 per month as we have very little income.

We have received a letter back today stating that they are not willing to accept £5.00 as it is unreasonable and the account will be passed on to the Bailiffs in the very near future.

I don't know what to do. We really do have hardly no money coming in at the moment. My husband lost his job at the end of June and is now trying to set up his own business so is only working about 10 hours a week at the moment. I am in the process of trying to claim Disability Living Allowance and the we had to make a new claim to the Tax Credits which they have told me could take 4 weeks before it is all sorted. I have applied for housing and council tax benefit and again this is in the process of being looked at.

Can anyone offer me any advice at all?? Particulary with the letter from the council.

Thanks, Karin

As a general rule, the minimum payment we accept is equivalent to deductions from income support/jsa which is £3 per week or £12 per month - I shouldn't see that being too much of a problem, particularly on a closed account

  • So should I write to them and offer £12 per month instead?

Yes, I would certainly give that a go, fully explaining your circumstances

my local council are really slow at sorting problems out by letter and phone, i would go and demand to see someone, explain the situation, they tried charging me for my mums council tax when she had died, i have no confidence in them sorting anything out

I'd ask for a full calculation of how the arrears arose and compare with your records, if they're anything like my council! Oh, actually I didn't owe nearly £800 after all!
