Thank you lauren_1 and TB  I did mention it as I once washed a coat in the machine with a splash of Woolite handwash liquid - the foam crept up out of the drawer and into the kitchen     Luckily I was there armed with loads of towels :o

:naughty::naughty::naughty: Pen-Pen, the clue was in the name...handwash...
Another good one to avoid is using the pure soap flakes....they make fantastic bubbles.

I have.. they obviously used way too much.. you only need a tiny squirt.. I always add a bit to bed sheet washes and never had a problem.

Kitty, if you find that you are struggling with trying to get them dry in this lovely summer we are having, then would finances stretch to getting them washed and dried at a local launderette.

I would go for a hot wash and a good glug of bleach, possibly not advisable if the towels are dark colours, but would be fine on pale colours.
Use plenty of fabric softener and get them bone dry.

I do think they can be salvaged.

  • thanks everyone

the towels are bright pink - so bleach probably not a good idea

not possible to hang them out as the weather up here is a bit dire at the moment and i have flu

don't have a tumbledryer and no access to a laundrette

thanks for the suggestions though - my oh would kill me if i put stardrops in and it did leak as we have just had a new kitchen in lol
  • Try adding a couple of spoons of bicarbonate of soda in with the washing powder that usually gets rid of that horrid mouldy smell that you can get with towels. Then if you can, dry them out doors that should bring them back smelling nice and fresh again.

Dettol works wonders, either prewash them in dettol if they are really bad stop the machine for 10 mins after it has filled with water and let them soak or add some with your wash powder, towels may smell a bit dettoly after wash however after the next wash they will be fine, horrid damp smell should be gone - its worked several times for me.

Oxygen releasing powders, like the vanish oxy stuff or own brand are very good for freshening stale laundry and removing all types of bad odours from washable fabrics. The oxygen released should kill any mould and mildew. I'd wash them as hot as they can be washed with plenty of oxy powder.
  • thanks everybody for your help

i think i'll try a bit of everything and see how i go :rotfl:
