Work Related Expense

Hi

Does anybody have any advice or info about how to go about claiming work related expenses?

I work for the NHS, but unfortunately Payroll and HR were unable to provide any useful info.

The type of things I want to claim back are professional body registration fees (£400 a year), royal college fees (£2300 over 3 years), and in general any things such as equipment I may have to buy in the future.

I have looked at the HMRC website but cant find the relevant forms or sections.

Any help would be great

Cheers

    Hi

It really depends what work type items you are claiming for but certainly professional subscriptions are allowable as long as they are necessary for your current job (you can check if the body is approved by HMRC at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/index.htm )

As you are claiming back for previous years, you will need to write in to your tax office anyway, so you may as well detail everything you want to claim and why it was necessary for your work. If you have copies of receipts/ letters from your employer stating that you needed to purchase said items that should be included.
  • Thanks for that. do I physically have to fill in a form or do I just write to the tax office with copies of receipts etc and expect a cheque back? Presumably it will be my local tax office rather than one in london?

No - it's the one that issues your Coding Notice (P2) ..... and should also be referenced on your P60?

There is a form you can complete (P87) but you are probably better to write a letter as you will need to explain why all the purchases were necessary for work and there isn't space on the form for that.
