Cheap but low fat starter and dessert?

Hello

I am going to my mates for a curry on Friday night.

We have been talking about it for a couple of weeks but only just agreed a date.

Originally I had offered to take the starter, dessert and a bottle of wine with me.

Since then I have realised just how skint I am. And I am also trying to cut down on my fatty food intake.

Does anyone have any ideas for a cheap but low fat starter and dessert that will "sit" well with a curry for main course?

Wine is sorted, got some sparkling rose from Aldi yesterday for £4.49 (was for me and OH but he didnt know, so no harm done, lol)

I was thinking for dessert, perhaps just buying a tub of sorbet, or I get some meringue nests and fresh berries with yoghurt or 5% fat squirty cream but need more inspiration please!

I am totally stumped for starter! want something a bit more adventurous than poppadums and mango chutney etc.

Thanks

You could make frozen yogurt blended with fruit and a touch of sugar. There are plenty of recipe's on Google.

I normally make onion salad for starter when doing curry.

An authentic indian pudding which is cheap and not too fattening is Keer, it's basically indian rice pudding made on the hob with basmati rice and a cardamom pod or 2. It's very tasty!
For a starter you could make a tandoori style chicken or shish kebab or paneer tikka(indian cheese marinated in spices and roasted in the oven with peppers and onion.

I just Googled keer and I think you mean Kheer. Keer has a completely different meaning.

How about Eton Mess? Here's Nigella making it on a clip on YouTube :)

You could substitute low fat greek yogurt for the cream, and leave out the expensive pomegranite juice or balsamic unless you already have some :)

Very possibly! I can spell it in HIndi but I had to guess how it would be spelt in English!

You can make sorbet very easily as well - whatever ripe fruit you choose and some sugar and water is pretty much all you need. Mango would be nice for after indian food I think but I've done it with pear and lemon too.

For dessert you need something refreshing. So I'd cheat and buy say 2 tubs of sorbet. The different colours will look fresh served up in a bowl or glass - just use an ice cream scoop.:o
