Frustration......

...... Decided to go down the IVA route and very happy with the decision I have made. I have been advised to cancel all my direct debits to my creditors but Natwest won't allow me to cancel the direct debit for their loan as there is still money o/s, regardless of the fact I have told them that I am making an offer of 10.00 a month until the statements have been sorted out...

....so this afternoon I have been looking online to organise a new bank account with another bank, hopefully in time for the next payday on the 28th, but it all seems so long winded. Filling in forms, waiting for paperwork which then needs to be signed and returned.

Called barclays and i even have to wait for a call from them to make an appointment to go in the branch.

Not sure how I am going to pay for the groceries next month at this rate

  • If you can go into a big city centre branch they usually let you open an account there and then if you have documents with you.. especially if you tell them you're just going to walk straight into another bank:P

It is frustrating how long red tape takes though. All the best with the wait!!!

If you are unable to cancel your direct debit, and you have no bank account to have your wages/money paid into, do you have someone else’s account you could have you money paid into? (if you trust them)

Alternatively you could apply for your ‘first right of appropriation’. You should instruct your bank that payments made into your account are to be used to pay for specific items. The bank has to act on these instructions and cannot refuse on the grounds that the account is overdrawn.

You need to complete and take this letter directly to your bank manager

    Sample letter
    Your name and address
Bank or Building Society name and address
    Date
    Dear Sir/Madam,
Account Number: 00000000000 – First Right of Appropriation
A payment of £ will be paid into the above account on this date . The account is currently overdrawn; however I need the money to meet my living expenses, utilities and rent payments over the next week.
I am writing to give notice that I intend to use my ‘first right of appropriation’ to earmark the £ for this purpose and will withdraw the sum of £ on this date in order to do so.
I will contact you separately to make arrangements to repay my accounts which remain with you.
    Yours faithfully,

    Ms A. Client

I have an appointment with a bank tomorrow to set up a new account. Then Natwest will have no choice to accept the token payment. Its them, who having charged me 68.00 for a missed direct debit have got me past my overdraft in the first place!

It shouldn’t be a problem then. Your charges will be included in your IVA if they are still unpaid by the time is all up and running.
