Using my PhD income to get a joint mortgage?

Hi there,
Im looking for a mortgage and arent getting such a positive response!! the bank I want to go with (barclays) wont give me an agreement in principle and say they cant guarantee giving me a mortgage, only natwest has said that'd be fine, but again not an agreement in principle they were just keen to sign me up without really paying attention to the stipend. who did you get yours from? and did u just sign up for the mortgage without getting an agreement?!
Have you tried going to an independent mortgage advisor? Some people don't like them, but maybe you can find one who is a specialist in your situation?
An Agreement in Principle, so I have been told by some people is very solid, and it's not likely after it you will be turned down, as long as you were accurate with what info you gave them.
Where as others have almost given me the impression it's "not worth the paper it's printed on" so to speak.
I guess finding an expert to help and making sure they explain to the banks exactly what your situation is. It could save you from doing all the running around, especially useful if you are working long hours.
I'm a software engineer and my girlfriend is a teacher, she does 60+ hours a week including all the work she does in the evenings and weekends. 7:15 to 17:45 in school, few hours each night, and easily 12+ over the weekends.
So I see where you're all coming from with doing long hours, and I can tell you she would never have had time to sort out everything in buying our house (in the process of now), where as I do less hours (around 45-50 overall, 37 of those in the office) and i've found it stressful enough :rotfl:0 -
