Getting timber cut

Hi,

Does anyone know where I could get some old rafters cut into planks? Anywhere in NI would do at this point; near Belfast/Bangor/Newtownards would be a bonus.

You'd think so, but the ones I've asked have all refused - they're afraid of damage to their sawblades, even though all of the nails have been removed.

Tree Loggers have saws with metal detectors which scan the logs before they're cut. This might be your only option if the timber merchants won't do it for ya.

it nearly impossible to say 100%, that there is no metal residue hiding somewhere in the wood

We've gone over the wood with a metal detector and taken out any nails we found but I know what you're saying. Fortunately the guy in Pretani's link is willing to take a chance ( up to a point - it's £20 a pop if he hits metal...)

Just an update - Mr Cunningham was brilliant and has done a lovely job of cutting the planks. For anyone who uses wood as fuel, it might be useful to know that he also does a fantastic deal on logs for the fire - £33 for a large trailer load.
