Super chunky knitting wool - where to buy

Daughter has taken up knitting - she likes knitting with super chunky wool (10mm & 12mm needles), but it's so expensive and there are not many shops near us that sell wool (certainly not at reasonable prices). Does anyone know of any websites etc that may have wool at discount.
I've had a quick google, but haven't found any bargains..... I suppose I could by a sheep!!!!

You could try here.

I found a couple of others who seem to be doing wool only, rather than synthetic yarns as well. There is also BSK who sell coned yarn for machine knitters, but my sister-in-law hand knits quite happily off a cone and they are usually good value.0 -
M & S sell knitting sets at the moment. Can't remember the price. They come with the needles, chunky wool and the patterns to knit either a scarf, hat or something else.0

Thanks, I'll check out both

John Lewis also sell these kits, but the're a bit pricy at around £20. That's just for a scarf. They might be a good idea as a gift for someone just staring out at knitting. One half of the world cannot understand the pleasures of the other0 -
Hi, Have a look in your local charity shop usually they have some in.Rita.0

Charity shops will often GIVE you the wool if you are happy to use it to knit squares for a blanket, or knitted tops, which you then give back to them. Ideal holiday occupation for children!
Oxfam used to publish a pattern for very simple knitted tops - not sure if they still do (maybe try their website or email them if you can't find one - best place to email is the 'disaster stores' - the place (used to be in Bicester) which sends emergency equipment, clothing, shelters etc all over the world.)
Think how many knitted tops must be needed in Pakistan atm... :rolleyes:Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
Saw the chunky knitting sets in my local M&S (Walsall) I think they were £10.00. have you tried your local market for cheaper balls of wool? There is a major craze at our work at the moment knitting up "Funky Fur" scarves. Have found that Wilkinson's sometimes has this type of woo1 for 99p per ball but havent seen any chunky in there. Keep on clicking!!!PF0

thanks for all your replies, not much success on the charity stores or the disaster stores but will keep looking0

Will second the recommendation for Texere yearns, huge range and always check their bargain bit! Has she tried knitting with pencil roving? Thats the stuff that is spun into woollen yarn by commercial spinners, its really chunky, usually not terribly expensive, and can be felted after knitting to give thick chunky textiles. You could try Wingham Wool Works who do a vast range of fibres and yarns for textile artists, not sure what their prices are running like at the moment. Ebay is also good for yarn, but the usual applies, check the description carefully and satisfy yourself its really a good deal before bidding.0
