How to get over being dismissed

As I have only worked 6 weeks in the past 6 months as was unfairly dismissed (Worked in outbound call centre and sometimes the dialler connected to a number which nothing happened - no noise etc. During the time I had a severe ear infection, I terminated about 10 calls as thought they were those calls that nothing happened. Turned out customers answered. Never given a 2nd chance. If this happened during my time at any of my past employers, they would have given me this 2nd chance.) and can't claim unfair dismissal as was there for 5 months. If I phoned in sick, they would not believe me. I believe that if you are unwell, go to work and managers etc can see you made an effort and can see you are unwell and/or struggling with the work as not feeling good. A few managers in the past said that shows you have 100% commitment to your work.

The 2 roles I had since then were both temping jobs and were terminated early, not down to my performance, but the first one was as I was going on holiday and was changed from a month's contract to 6 weeks. I applied for it as would finish on Friday and be on holiday and after a month's assignment, had some money for the holiday. I was told to leave after 2 weeks. The second job was for maternity leave. Was expected to finish end of Jan. There was someone that did 5 months before I did. The woman that I was covering wanted to go back to work after 6 months, not a year. I did a month's work there.

Now, people have blips/low points in their personal lives such as divorce, death of a close relative, illness etc. Then they overcome these. Why can't employers think this can be applied to work? Some don't want to know me due to me being dismissed. I keep stressing (in a polite way) that dismissal was my one and only and totally ashamed of this. Then I mention some impressive achievements at my previous jobs, and this makes no difference. I thinking some employers think 'dismissed' means 'useless'. I am not that all. I have been very unlucky. Useless and unlucky are two different words with different meanings. One small thing called an ear infection has led me to this! If you want to know, it was my first ear infection for about 11 years and I was at school then!

I have applied for numerous jobs and jobs which are paid a lot less than I was on and even part time jobs and still very few are interested in me. My few friends and family are shocked and disgusted on how I am being treated! Employers are choosing people with less than a year's experience over me with almost five! Unfortunately, I have no friends or family that have their own business, so I could help out etc.

Your advice will be important to me.

Are you sure you aren't putting them off? I got bored at line 3.

I can't say I was dismissed. Employers want to know why

You weren't unfairly dismissed - the job wasn't for you.

On your CV or application form explain the last six months as "Various temporary assignments." Don't go into any long explanations - I'm with Zazen on this. When someone comes up with lots of reasons it sounds like excuses. Focus on the five years before that - what's your employment history like for that period.

At the end of the day, no one owes anyone a living and employers won't take on someone who they see as a risk. Be as positive as you can - what you have learned from the past six months is the value of a secure job, that you can adapt, and that outbound call centre work isn't for you.

(Some people are unlucky, but as an employer I don't want anyone bringing any bad luck in here!)

If it's any consolation, I've just been made redundant from my job of 12 years. I had glowing performance and references etc but the company is in severe dire straits and laying off staff left, right and centre. I was told that I had been "dismissed" which even HR explained was not a nice term in my circumstances, just that they have to do it formally. I've been out of work since Friday and already have 4 job interviews lined up for this week and some temp work if all else fails.

So I've been "dismissed" but still have no problem with getting interviews - just think you have to be a bit pro-active and flexible in terms of what you want to do.

Sorry if this does not appear helpful, but I can't understand how you can't get jobs. I was made redundant from a highly qualified (but not highly paid although not badly paid job!) and already have a load of interviews fixed up. If they are not suitable, I will look around again whilst working but temping is appealing at the moment.

    Good luck though.

After 12 years I would say you mere made redundant rather than dismissed.

I was made redundant but the term that is used is "dismissed", which seems a bit harsh but that is the formal term used by the company. However, they do explain on the reference, which they have, as they gave me a copy of the reference that they will send out.
