19 yrs on do i still have to say i have been a bankrupt

Hi
It's roughly 19 yrs since my ex husband and i were discharged from bankruptcy.
However on certain forms (insurance etc) "Have you ever been bankrupt" comes up as one of the questions, don't want to lie and say no but don't see why i should still be penalised (SP) for something that happened a long while ago.
It's hard enough after discharge to get yourself back on track without having it pop back and cause problems years later.
So do i have to declare that i have been a bankrupt after all these years or can i just ignore it?
TIA

Unfortunatly if it says 'have you ever' you do have too. You could not declare it and hope. If you make a claim there is a chance they won't pay out if they find out you lied. It's a difficult one.Namaste DeeDee x0

If an official form such as insurance etc asks the question then yes i'm afraid you do have to inform them otherwise you would be breaking the law and policys have been cancelled by firms from someone I knew that didnt say a word in the past....if nobody asks then you dont have toWe all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0

Have to agree with the rest.
If they ask then you have to answer honestly.
Using your example, false statements on an insurance application will automatically be grounds to void the insurance in the event of the claim. Providing incorrect information on other things like credit and mortgage applications is also a big no-no.
After all this time, the effect is likely to be minimal anyway.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Wow many thanks for your quick responses.
I thought that was probably the case, will just have to get partner to put things in his name if the question arises.
Thanks again0 -

Call this ignorant, BR bashing, or whatever else, but surely the people you owed money to still aren't getting their money, even after a long while? You're still getting the benefits of BR (ie not paying stuff back), so perhaps you have to accept the downside still, too...or is that not how it works?0 -

The money we owed from our small business (less than 4k at the time) was well and truly paid back i can assure you!
It was the most stressful worrying time of my life, and i would not wish it on anyone.
But thanks for your comment.0 -

The point was because although 4k doesn't sound a lot it is if you don't have it.
No family member at the time could or would help out.
We lived in rented accomodation so couldn't borrow.
At the time it was a constant struggle to make ends meet,i could have papered a room with all the final demands etc.
My ex husband was an alcholic (sp) and constantly "borrowed" the takings and i found it impossible to keep going (hell and back spring to mind)
My only option (taken on advice) was to declare myself BR.
Then get rid of hubby!!
Anyway remind me never to ask a question on this board again :rotfl:0 -

Anyway, to continue my education...so if you went BR, how come you still ended up paying everything back?0
