can someone please help me sort my budget out?

trying to get debt free but received letter from energy provider yesterday saying due to increasing energy prices they are putting up bills by 12%. present provider is more expensive but customer service excellent and they have freephone number. read martin's article and looked at recommended sites- savings could be made. used other comparison sites and all the results differ even though same put same put in. when i rang up providers to check info, they qouted different figures (e.g. website said british gas save you money on gas but over phone they said would cost £25 more!). i also found you get totally different results depending on whether you put a figure for use in kilowatts or monthly direct debit payments. i've no idea who to go with!
one of popular ones was powergen but there have been some horrendous threads on this site about their customer service and i don't want to get caught out.
