Was in Staples Cardiff bay today and they had a Ipaq RZ1710 with a wired tomtom gps, car kit and maps for £149.99....Not sure how many they have, could be ony one.
They also had the mitec mio 168 value kit for the same price.....this unit has the built in GPS but no memory card or maps.
Was tempted myself on both, but as I've already got a Ipaq 1940 with bluetooth GPS I couldn't justify it
I was in Nottingham last week and they had the Ipaq there for £175.00. Mio's were the same price.
This could be nationwide with them.
The Ipaq on its own last time I looked in PC world is about £170.00

I cannot comment on the ipaq but I have the 168 and it comes with car mount and its very neat with it having gps built in and mine works very well. Sd cards are cheap enough too.

looks a good price - be aware the IPAQ is £99 from here...

I know its refurbished - but you can get new for £120
All prices are + VAT so maybe not too much cheaper...0 -
The HP with tomtom kit here http://www.totalpda.co.uk/TomTom-Navigation-System-with-HP-iPAQ-1710.aspx#HP100UK is £292.58....if they had stock.
Speed camera database does not usually come with the units its added on sepreatly by yourself...nice and easy to do data base can be downloaded here http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras.php
With regard to which is better...hard to say, the Mio is an all in one unit which means only one power cable needed, whereas the Ipaq will need the cable to power the gps unit and the PDA plus link the two together...in all the mio will be a neater unit.
The advantage of the Ipaq is it comes with the map software and memory card whereas the mio doesn'tWelcome, rogerramjet.

I have the RX1710 HP bundle as mentioned above. It is an excellent piece of kit. The wires are a bit of a pain compared to the Mio or a bluetooth solution, but the package does exactly what it says on the box - well. I've upgraded mine to TomTom 5.1 and it guided me all over Northern Spain without a hitch.
I'm in the market for a Mio for my girlfriend who will be using hers on foot aswell as in the car. The fact that the GPS is built in on this model is a big plus point IMHO.0 -
...is definately a bonus - when it is working. When the integral GPS unit fails, your PDA will have to go away too!
I use an Ipaq with a BT GPS unit. The GPS unit died and, while warranty things got sorted with the overseas manufacturer, I picked up a replacement cheap on eBay. Altogether now "Back on the Road Again".... :j :j
Now armed with 2x BT GPS, we are seriously considering a second Pocket PC for her indoors... and we will have a good bit of redundancy with 2 PPC and 2 GPS units.“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.
But when I got to be twenty one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”

Do the Mio's have a reputation of their GPS unit failing?0

Thats a bit like saying best to get a desktop pc instead of a laptop as if screen goes you've had it!
Like all electronics now you have a chance of it failing but thats life really. If it fails in warranty I would rather send it off for a repair than buy an additional one (use a map like in the olden days) as thats adding to cost. If it goes out of warranty then just get a wired one or get it fixed.

I bought one back in March when Expansys had them on the deal of the day....The GPS unit never worked from the start....Contacted Mitec (who make them) and they were surprised that it didn't work...in the end sent it back to Expansys who tested it and said it was faulty but this was the first they had seen.
Other peeps I know with that model have never had a problem with them.
Also as above poster mentions....there is a warantyWelcome, rogerramjet.

Just popped across to Staples and picked up the Mio 168 with CoPilot v4 software for £149.95. It was the last one they had in stock. Includes the PDA, CoPilot software, car kit, UK and Ireland maps and a 128Mb SDcard. I'll be putting TomTom 5.1 on it anyway but I still think this is a good deal even for a Mio by itself.
EDIT - Opened the box and it was either second hand or ex-demo. Either way it was scratched and looked used. As it was to be a gift, I made use of their no quibble returns policy!0
