Rings! Confused!

Hi we went looking at rings yesterday - both engagement and wedding as still not got my engagement ring - and im getting confused! What is the real difference (if any) in the cheaper ones in argos and the jewellers ones? I really cant see a differnence - especially in wedding rings. We dont have a big budget for rings and im not that much of a jewellery person so dont want to spend much more than £200 on all 3 rings! My mum said that argos jewellery makes your skin go black but ive never known that to happen and if its gold how can it? Help!!

My daughter worked for a nationwide jewellers chain whilst at Uni and the difference she tells me is in the quality of the diamonds.
Her fiance had an awful time choosing her engagement ring for this reason, she can spot a good diamond at 100 paces!
Also, the more reputable jewellers more often than not only use 'conflict' free diamons not 'blood' diamonds that are issued with a certificate to say that they have been acquired 'fairly and humanely' if you like.
Quite frankly, as far as I'm concerned, it's the symbolism of the ring that matters, not how much it cost or how big and bright the diamond is.
One little tip, ask to see the ring and hold it up to the light, the 'yellower' the diamond looks the less quality in it.
Hope that helps.0 -
Sometimes the diamonds in the Argos rings are not real either - just cubic zirconia. The gold will also be thinner and poorer quality.
At a jewellers you are paying for quality not only in the manufacture but also in the stones.
If you are in commuting distance of Birmingham then visit the Jewellery Quarter there because you can have a ring made for the fraction of the price that it will be in a high street jeweller.
The difference between an engagement ring and a wedding ring is that an engagement ring will have a stone and wedding rings are usually plain (although I note that fashions are changing and they also include small stones if required).0 -
Hi 6angels, My engagement ring is argos this was because we too did'nt have a fortune to spend and I do not wear very much jewellery, my ring look really nice, it has no yellow in, It does have a diamond which I have a certificate for. Once this is on you finger no one will know wear it has come from they will just see a beautiful ring, look round at other peoples rings you cannot tell if they cost £100 or thousands of pounds. I tried on loads of ring in jewellers and another reason why I choose the argos one was it sat right on my hand, my hands are small and I wanted something dainty, all the ones like that in other shops were £500 or more.
hope this helps0 -
I've been wearing an Argos wedding ring for 11 years now ... and it was one of the cheapest in their range ... and it still looks good, hasn't blackened my finger or anything! It's the symbology that's important to me, not the cost.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Make sure they are both (engagement and wedding) made from the same metal, as 2 different metals will wear eachother away.
White gold needs to be replated as it goes yellow, so if you are not keen on yellow gold, go for platinum if you can afford it, or silver if you can't.
I don't have any argos rings, mine are from H samuels, and werent expensive, but have lasted me fine. (not wedding rings, I am not married)0 -
i was wondering about this too as we are in mid of buying wedding rings. my question is not about the diamonds so much just the gold too. i noticed another poster said something about a jewellery quarter in birmingham where u can get rings made cheaper than high street, does anyone know of any of these places in scotland? thanks xmyx0

I believe there is a side street off a main street in Glasgow which has rows and rows of Jewellery shops which make their own jewellery. That would be where I would go:rotfl: l love this site!! :rotfl:0
