Better carpet or better underlay?

I have chosen some carpet but it comes in 2 qualities/weights. So does the underlay. I can't afford the best of both. So would you go for the better weight carpet with the cheaper underlay or the better underlay with the lighter weight carpet?
Thanks!
Chrissy

I've usually gone for better underlay - which may outlast the carpet and be useful for the next lot of carpet. It doesn't have to look pretty.

You can often find good quality underlay on the net very cheap, then have the best of both worlds.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • I agree, just doing this myself. Obviously not really cheap carpet.
The underlay makes it feel expensive so always spend more.
  • I got underlay off the net for about half the shop quote, fitted it myself before the fitter came with the carpet.
  • I bought mine from here http://www.discounted-carpet-underlay.co.uk/tredairepu_carpet_underlay.html (the 11mm stuff)

Be aware that if you buy it from the front page its even cheaper http://www.discounted-carpet-underlay.co.uk/index.html

When the carpet fitter was at my house I told him I would lay it and he said he would. I was buying the carpet from him though.

My neighbours got roughly the same carpets fitted by the house builder and you can instantly tell the difference.

My parents got my "spare" roll of underlay and put a cheap remnant on it. It's makes the carpet feel much more expensive.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:
