Stale flower water smell - help

Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread, but I wonder if anyone can help.
Somebody recently bought us some flowers that have the water in the presentation wrapping so to speak.
When we woke up yesterday, the flowers had fallen on the floor and the water had leaked out over the carpet and subsequently dried. There was no stain so I didnt think too much of it until this morning, when I realised how much of a smell it has left! Presumably there is a lot of bacteria in the water?!?
We have tried "Febreezing" it, but that just masks the smell. I have also tried using a hand-held steam cleaner but that hasnt done much yet.
Is there any way I can get rid of it without having to hire one of those expensive "carpet doctor" hoover thingys?

Yuk.... this happened to us, don't think the bacteria smell is life threatening, but you sure know it's there !!!!
Try a big dollop of bicarb --dry on wet carpet--wet if the carpet has dried, rub it in with your hands and leave to dry (the carpet, not your hands). Then just hoover up the powder residue. Should work, won't do harm if it doesn't do good.
good luck:cool:0 -
just had another thought Dorks, has the water soaked into whatever is under the carpet? Might be worth investigating.........0
