Just had a quick search and there is a lot about moorcroft but nobody actually mentions the balliffs. They seem to threaten a lot. Skylight and bat both had letters from moorcroft so maybe try PM them to ask for more details might help. It can be fairly quiet at wkends here so if it's urgent try the DFW forum too.DFree impartial debt advice available from: National Debtline - Tel: 0808 808 4000 | The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - Tel: 0800 138 1111 | Find your local Citizens Advice Bureau

When they have threatened the baliffs - at what stage is the debt? What I mean is, is a CCJ in place via the courts for payment and has your friend renaged on this deal??
I am going to assume that you friend simply cannot afford to pay on a debt, it has not been taken to court yet and this is a rude/nasty/threatening letter - and its scaring him as its designed to.
You are correct in council tax - never renage on this or your rent. But if this is for another debt, then at this stage its not even a baliff - its just a debt collector who *may* or may not call round. They have less powers than a lollipop lady. NEVER open the door for one, NEVER let one in your home, NEVER leave your home with any windows/doors unlocked. If you do not let them in, there is naff all they can do. They cannot force their way in etc. Its all designed to scare you - as most people are not aware of their rights and stupid programmes like "Beat the Baliff" are misleading with false information.
If a CCJ has been issued, then IF payments are not kept upto date, the original creditor can send round baliffs - that still have no power if you don't let them in. Court appointed baliffs (for council tax etc) do have more powers and should be avoided at all costs.
I have had letters from Moorcroft threatening to send the boys round. They didn't bother at all.
Your friend needs to chat to CCCS or Payplan asap. If BR is the best course of action for them, then so be it. If they are on benefits then there are some fee concessions but it still means a lifestyle cut back on spending to save for the costs. It depends whats more important to them. I went BR, my OH didn't as his creditors are quite relaxed ATM and BR doesn't bother him.0 -

I did too and when they threatened to send someone round I rang them up and told them to send their top boy because if anyone from their nasty little firm came to my house they'd have a rather irate person confronting them.
Form my experience these DCA's threaten all sorts but do very little.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that these DCA's have the power or authority to just send a bailiff round.0 -

Tell your friend not to worry to much.
I had the nasty letters loads of phone calls. In the end I just stopped picking up the phone when their number came up. About 2 days before I went BR they caught me out. Telling me they would apply for BR. I laughed told them to go ahead and save me the fees. They didn't like me pointing out how much it would cost them to do it. Just said ok stay with current payments.BSC No: 186 There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Unless someone's nicked the candle !
