chinese pancakes

I've got some left over duck and fancied using it up with pancakes. My local supermarket doesn't sell them so I thought I'd make them myself. I found a recipe that says I need sesame oil but I don't have any. I've got sunflower or olive; will that taste ok? I know that sesame oil is very distinctive but it'll be ok? I could go and look for sesame oil but I really don't have time to trawl about today.

Hiya,
Just done a google search and looked on the BBC food website and all the recipes I've found for pancakes have said to use sesame oil and I'm afraid none of them have suggested any alternative.
Unfortunately I think you're going to have to go with what it says in the recipe.I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle0 -
Hi there,
I did the same the other day, but couldn't find any pancakes OR sesame oil in my supermarket, so i cheated and bought tortillas.

Mr Kabie is on a mission, I've asked him to have a look on the way home. He's not the most reliable though so I'm not sure what he'll bring back.0

Let us know how it goes. Hope you get the sesame oil, or that any alternative you use works out well.0

Walnut or veg oil is fine to substitute for sesame oil when making the pancakes. The main thing to remember is to have the water very hot (but not boiling) when you mix it into your flour.
A nice alternative is to wrap the duck in lettuce leaves instead of pancakes.I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0 -
Could Mr Kabbies not cheat and go to the chinease take - away shop and ask for a packet of frozen pancakes?
I know its not exactly MSE.0 -
He came back with rice pancakes. They were the things you use for those chinese roll things. It said they could be eaten cold or cooked so we had them cold. You had to soak them in hot water first and they were a bit odd. I ended up having mine without them after trying one but he liked them.
There was no sesame oil to be found
next time I'll defo make my own though. Good idea to ask at a takeaway, that didn't occur to me.0
