Present Ideas for my 86 Year Old Grandad

Hi Guys,
I love this board and just know that you will be able to help me out. It's my Grandad's 86th Birthday on Sunday and I am at a loss as to what to get him.
He is a fairly young 86, but not in great health. He isn't supposed to have too much sweet stuff due to borderline diabetes, can't use any fancy toiletries due to sensitive skin. He is quite handy and can sew. His main hobby is fly fishing, which he can now only do occassionally but he does tie flies. He also loves crosswords but I have done puzzle books, pens, dictionaries, crossword solvers many times before. The other thing is he always says he doesn't want or need anything so not to buy him anything, but I'd like to buy or make something.
Thanks in advance for your help.

*Do you have children?
If so how about a nice framed picture of the children?
*Could you do a cross stitch?
*a scrapbook of some of his old photos? say from when he got married and had children, then when you came along etc? Maybe make the pages look older or buy older scrapbook paper (sory of yellowish in colour?)
*How about a hot water bottle to take fishing with him?
one of them thermal cup things which hold a single cup of tea/coffee but keeps them *warm for a while?
Can't think straight at the minute but hopefully something will come to me and I will comeback.Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Happy Birthday to your grandad

How about a no sew blanket to help keep him warm? http://heartsandtrees.blogspot.com/2007/12/no-sew-fleece-blankets.html
A scrapbook or other photo themed gift is a good idea. How about a photo mug or jigsaw? Snapfish do college mugs so you can put lots of little pics on one mug.
How about a basket type gift with mug, his favourite tea/coffee or both, couple of DVDs or books or both so a sort of gentleman's relaxing hamper?
Hey Rusty, for someone who says she can't think straight, that's not a bad list of good ideas

Ooh I like the scrap book idea- thanks. I'll have a dig through my old photos and see what I can find.
Also love the hot water bottle idea so I think I'll see if I can get a mini one as that would be really useful.
Just seen the photo mug idea which is a brilliant one, but unfortunately I've left it too late this time. I'll bear it in mind for Christmas though!
Thanks so much.:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator

This would be a lovely gift not only for your Grandad but also your children would probably like to read it in the future.
I bought one for my Mum for her birthday in June but sadly she died a few days before then, I wish now that I had given it to her before and we could have filled it in together.
You could make your own if you got a hardcover A4 notebook and wrote a question on each page - if you would like me to send you any of the questions feel free to pm me.
Another nice thing is to start a family tree, we had been doing ours for a little while and had great fun - be warned its addictive0 -
Thank you for that Crystalclear. I've gone with the scrapbook idea now (along with a little bag of marzipan) but I love the idea of that book. OH and I are just starting to think about having children so this will be a perfect thing to get started.
I might just order one for my Grandparents actually (I've got an Amazon Prime trial at the moment and am making the most of it :-)):DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator
