Correct Level Of Tax Being Paid?

I started a job last week, I didn't have a P45 to give them at that point so I was expecting to be taxed at Emergency tax level. I have received my pay today and from £200 I have taken home £97.88. Would this sound correct?

I have left this job now so don't as yet have a payslip to check.

I wouldn't have thought you were eligible for tax at all earning only £200?

I worked 4 days last week, started on Wednesday and worked till Saturday, total for a full week would have been £300. Normal working week was 6 days.

    Please give more details.

Suggest that obtain payslip (which must be given by law) and then please itemize the deductions from your payslip, and state the tax code used.

It's all a bit academic now as only your next employer can make any refund. Make sure you obtain a P45 from this job and hand it to your next employer. I assume you are on E code - in which case you will need to contact your new tax office when you start work and get them to put you on the right code. When this happens, your employer will make the refund.

When you start your next job, if you don't have a P45, then make sure you fill in a P46.....this will enable your employer to give you the correct allowances for that week/month......if the next/new job is your only source of income.....then check what code is shown on the P45 you get from the job you have just left.....if that code is BR, then think before handing it in as new employer will also operate code BR.

Does this make sense...reading back...i'm almost confusing myself.

It does sound as if all of your income may have been taxed - perhaps you had a tax code of 0 because you hadn't filled in a P46?

Once you get onto the correct tax code and have told your current employer about earnings and tax deducted in previous employment(s) you will automatically get back tax overpaid in the previous job, assuming the previous job was in this tax year.

    Just to update....

Got my payslip today, I am on a BR taxcode and have had my full £300 taxed at 20% so that is what I was expecting. Where the extra deduction has come from is a strange "under banking" amount of £51........to say I am fuming is an understatement!!!!

    Thanks again for the help.

Ok but at least things are moving forward. You will receive a P45 hand this to your next employer and contact the tax office to get a correct code. the excess tax will be refunded.

No idea about this "extra bankin" charge. You must ask the ex-employer about this.
there may be a simple answer....unlikely to be a scam.

On no account hand the P45 from your old job to your new employer as they will use the code BR. You need to ask your new employer for a form P46. Sign this to say it is your only job and you will be put on E code (which is better than BR)> Then contact your tax office to ask them to issue a cumulative code to your new employer - he will make the refund through your wages.

I would be most interested to know what your employer says the "under banking" deduction is.
