Get the TaxMan to send you a cheque for £400!

This applies to Registered Nurses and Midwives

Do you throw away the tax relief form your Professional body sends you each year? Don't!

I completed mine this year for the past six tax years (you can claim up to seven) and have just received a cheque from the tax man for nearly £400 and my tax code has changed till April 06 from 489 to 577.

True, it's a bit of a pain contacting the RCN and NMC for them to send you details of subscriptions paid per year, but who's grumbling?

If I had not been nursing these past six years in mufti, I could have claimed for laundring a uniform too!

Good Luck
Stu

Does this this include any nurses working for the NHS? eg: dental nurses etc.

Could have wider implications than that! My DH is a Fellow of the Institute of Analysts and Programmers, and his subscription for that can be offset against his tax liability. It's not even something he HAS to belong to.

I think it can also come off your gross income for various means tested wotsits. Not sure which ones, WTC, CTC, parental assessment for student loan application - so would just suggest you bear it in mind whenever you are filling in such forms.

That's true - and it's actually a good thing. If your taxable earnings are X lower because you've paid X for professional memberships or uniform laundry, then not only will you get a tax rebate, but you'll also get higher awards for working tax credit, child tax credit and your children's student loans - provided you put the same taxable income figure on all these forms.

However - if the reason you get a tax rebate is because your allowances are bigger - then it won't make any difference to WTC, CTC or student loans.
