Reward for "A" levels?

Not sure which forum topic to put this in but....daughter has got her A level results today..done well and got into university of her choice. my question is..is it the done thing to reward at 18 for doing exams? If so..any idea on monetary value?!
We are going to help with the cost of uni (carefully saving for years!) namely the accomodation altho she is taking the loan out.

  • well when i passed mine (10 years ago now) i was given a couple of options, one was cash ( about £250 i think) or a shopping spree (about the same value) i think i had the shopping as we went O/S just after i passed so i ended up travelling for 4 years instead of uni (not for everyone but i liked it ;) )

btw well done to her and so pleased she got her choice of uni

She is set on going to uni...and that's going to cost us quite a lot as I would like to help her out and not have her come out with an enormous debt..just a moderate one as I can't afford all the money needed to get her through uni!

We just went for a family meal after my A levels 6 years ago. Surely she's really pleased with herself anyway it just needs to be a token to show you are proud.

Is she learning to drive? if she is then why not book a block booking of so many lessons? or maybe put some towards her first car?

When we passed our GCSE's we had 10 lessons each these were block booked. Then when we turned 18 we had the choice of present. We could either buy ourselves an old banger and dad would do it up and spray it etc or we could have a set amount to buy a brand new car.

When i got my A levels and into Uni of my choice, my parents presented me with a big box of typical "student life" foods like baked beans, pot noodles & huge bags pasta, rice .... think it also had some washing up liquid and other prasctical bits. And hidden at the bottom was fancy chocs :-)

You could also include student cookbook ...

DS got his A levels last year and started Uni in September - his reward - a nice meal out .

DD got AS results yesterday - her reward - a belgian bun from the bakers.

They shouldn;t need monetary rewards - I know some friends of DS & DD who were "Paid" £50 per A grade at GCSE.

Don't even go there on the monetary reward - SDH's advice is good - DS had one of those from his godparents.

I think it varies hugely. There was no reward as such when I passed my A levels, although my Grandad did give me £10 to console myself at the pub since I didn't do as well as expected.

My best friend was pre-incentivised and 'paid' per grade as another poster mentioned.

A family meal out to a restaurant of her choice would be a lovely gesture IMO.

I'd suggest going out for a meal to celebrate.

I certainly wouldn't give a cash amount (and I say this as someone who was in your daughter's position 5 years ago). You shouldn't need to pay her because she's done well. She worked hard for herself, not you and that's an important lesson to learn. As long as she knows you are proud of her - and that she should be proud of herself - that's all that matters.

(Plus the next few years will be very expensive!)
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.

Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.

  • Is she going away to uni?
Why not treat her to a few homely items for her room, like a nice duvet cover and blankets, groovy mugs, kettle, toaster, nice cutlery,
Or a home made hamper of beauty products, shower gels, nice smellies a nice bathrobe and pjs La Senza have a sale shop at junction 32 amongst other places. hth
Ps well done to her! :T
