I am currently in despair  I hate my job in sales working 60 hours a week  and trying to run a home as well:A I have to deal with horrid people everyday and I hate it!!!!!  . I have a five year old son who I want to spend more time with too, I pay 190.66 a month for child care I get a car with work and earn about 2200 a month although have to pay for fuel about 60 per month. That comes to 1949.34 after taking childcare off. I do not get Tax credits as our earings are too high and would take a year or so before I could start to claim ago I think as the figures are based on previous years income.
I am thinking off starting my own ebay shop selling designer clothes I have made quite abit before with buying at carboots and on ebay before then selling on for a profit unfortunatley work got in the way and I had to give up,
Does anyone make a living off ebay ??? Could you let me know your stories and what type off income I could expect to earn. Do you know anyone who works from home doing ebay if not you.???
I am pretty desperate I am thinking off just walking out today right now!!! :j ( Maybe leave it until payday:eek:
Would be sooooo grateful to here if you think  I am brave
or just mad????:rotfl:
Thanks MSE FOR CHANGING MY LIFE!!!!:D

Just one thing about tax credits - based on last years income.
A couple of years ago I left a well paid job to go self employed so my income went right down to next to nothing while I built things up.
Under the "old" job, I received the minimum tax credit of £11 a month or something but I telephoned them on the day I left, and they said that because it was such a drastic change of income they would recalculate it immediately and the "previous year" rule did not apply.
So, if you do leave work, ring tax credits straight away and tell them of the change and they may well sort out a payment pretty promptly.
good luck - I have been there with the job situation, and although not ebay took the same sort of plunge into uncertainty, so I know how you feel!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
Just wanted to say I was in similar situation but dident earn as much as you only 1200 net per month of which £730 fulltime day nursury and £30 petrol which left me 540 net and worked silly hours, missed my family and hated my job! So I quit 6weeks ago and plan to go self employed making things and selling on ebay, also planning to sell at fairs and start website up.
In addition to this I have signed up to be cloth nappy agent making commisiion on whats sold to try and boost my income.
I am currently surviving on final salary, slowly dwinding due to business start up costs. In teh eman time I ahve done 2 carboots and made 70quid so far and am in lucky position to have high value prams to sellw hich should hopefully tide me over until income comes in.
I have worked out I need at least £400 a month to live on, will mean making some cutbacks spending wise but will be worth it when get to spend more time with daughter.Im fortunate hubby pays bills/ rent.
So i just need money for daughters reduced nursury, mob phone, credit card, insurance and spending money as i usually buy anything my daughter needs on my salary.
But eventually after huge clearout i will run out of stuff to sell so need an income.
Ebays good but not sure if its good to put all eggs into one basket maybe worth you doing otehr thinsg in conjunction like avon, quidco, free bingo, mystery shops, surveys see extra income board for more details.
Where would you get stock from? Ebay paypal fees soon add up.
Have you got much lying round u can sell liek clothes kids/adult, books, games, dvds and cds they all sell well.Theres few more weeks left of carboot season too.
Your figure seems high could you exist on less by making cutbacks?
do try tax credits, good luck.pad by xmas2010 £14,636.65/£20,000::beer:

When you say £2,000 do you mean net profit? Because with income of £24,000 per year, you'd have to pay basic rate tax and NI, and of course there is the cost of your stock. So to make £2000 profit you'd have to take, I don't know, say £3000 in sales. Would you have to think about advertising, storage of your stock, postage costs.
Before you do anything I would sit down and done a busines plan to take into account all the costs and the volume of sales you would need to do each month. Do you think that you have a reliable source for that amount of stock - it would be no good making money for a couple of months then finding that you couldn't find any thing else to sell.0 -
I did carboot sales years ago in all weather I made lots buying and selling selling the nest stuff on ebay once I sold a pair off boots that cost me a pound for 98 pounds.:j
My income is 2200 on average after tax I think after costs I could survive on 1300 per month . The costs would not be as high as you may think if it goes the way it did when I last did ebay I made atidy profit Its just about having the guts to quit my job and take the plundge my wage can be anything from 1300 to 4k I work in sales i love the buzz but its hard very hard and very stressful  i do not wanty to be in a coffin before i am 30 and my son is only 5! I have missed him alot the past two years . I took the job to pay off my debt two years ago I sid id do it for 2 years and I have been there two years today!!! I have wasted alot of money too though as I keep telling myself i work hard so i deserve it and so does my son and my oh.
I would also go back to doing carboots and buying at jumble sales.:j
I will look into how you guys work quidco and do comps and learn how to do quizzes too.

Hello there,
I once sold kiddies clothes on Ebay. I enjoyed it made a little profit, but not alot. I am thinking of having a good clear out to flog some stuff on a car boot.
If I were you and you know you hate your job, but I would seriously think about paying off your debts first and then get some money behind you too see you through whilst you start up selling. You never know what's around the corner for instance are you a single parent? Do you own your own home? What if for instance you needed a new roof?
I badly wanted to leave my job at one point because of a nasty experience I had at work, but I've come round and gotten over it and I am glad I didn't throw it all in.
I also understand what you mean about missing your child, I am a single parent with a 6 year old little girl with no support from her father. BUT some people may not like me saying this but for me there has to be balance in my life, I need my job basically to socialize and have a bit of adult company, I think that possibly makes me a better mum, for me there has to be a balance of home and working life if you get what I mean.0 -
I will consider all options , I am going to work out how much id have to sell to break the needed income and look at the pros and cons and do two lists ...I will hang on in. Its extra hard as it is extra weird at work at the mo with the credit crunch we sell cars and we are get a real hard time with cusomers. xx:mad: Total debt at lbm 27420/oct07.Today 18954.000

Excuse the question but what kind of sales do you do?0

Hi Lisa
I'm in a very similar position to you except I'm still on maternity leave and desperate not to go back to work! My OH has a really good job and as such we aren't able to claim tax credits towards LOs childcare so essentially most of what I earn would go towards paying that! I only need £400 to pay my bills as OH pays for the house whilst our daughter is so small.
I have registered my business with HMRC today and I hope I can make a go of it. I would obviously like to make more but I have cut my cloth accordingly and any extra wold be a bonus.
Let us know how you go

hi, just be careful , because they might class you as a business seller, read this http://pages.ebay.co.uk/businesscentre/explained/8.html .. i sell on ebay, have done for 6 yrs, but only as a private seller, just as a hobby to get a few extra quid now and then, but i have noticed over the yrs how much ebay have put their fees up, whats to stop them putting the fees up even more each year.....just be careful, its a hard way to make a living, but for extra spending money as a private seller, its ok....maybe if you got a part time job, less hours and then use ebay for fun, not having to depend on itCorduroy pillows are making headlines! Back home in London now after 27years wait! Duvet know it's Christmas, not original, it's a cover.0

I agree with what Arthur says. When I was doing my little bit of selling on Ebay, selling fee's and Paypal fee's took a heck of a lot.
I wasn't trying to say to you don't do it, I was just trying to give you ideas of what to think of.
What about like Arthur says, get a part-time job. Then maybe do your Ebay selling as well as that at least you would still have a bit of an income coming in. With my working part-time and being a single parent I get help with tax credits and help with my childcare so it's not really bad at all. I have worked for the same employer for 20 years always full time until I had my little girl. I love my job for me it was never the job that I had a problem with my issues and what caused me to have a breakdown was the people I worked with but through counseling I am learning to come to terms with that and learn stratergies in order to cope. Although it's taught me a lesson, and I am putting as much money as I possibly can each month away as back up, because what happened to me at work damaged my trust in my employer and with my health issues I am extremely wary and I need to feel secure that I can keep a roof over me and mini-me's head.
Good luck and I hope it all works out for you! Oh, and after all of what I have said, no job is worth making yourself ill with stress, one thing that springs to mind is that Employers have a duty under health and safety laws regarding stress in the work place could be a good idea to do some digging and find out what your company does to manage stress in the workplace.
