I need some help - and advice!!

We live in Spain and work here with a new business. I have a credit card debt from England - which at the moment I am finding very difficult to keep up with the payments. I have settled with other cards to pay a nominal sum and they have stopped all interest. One card Amex has passed the debt to a collection agency after agreeing a short term payment plan which I have uphold. The agency is very threatening and refuse to agree to any payment plan I suggest - although they will accept and take the payment! They will not stop the interest. The amount that suggest I pay is above what I can afford. The overdue amount is not huge. They have even mentioned bankruptcy! The debt is not massive and I contacted them and have given them full contact details. I dont think I can get help from any english agencies as we are not officialy resident in the uk. If any one has any suggestions or contacts which we can use please can you let me know. England is still our home and one day we hope to return.

    Need a little more information.

Not sure why this agency is adding interest to the debt - what was it for? creditcard, loan, overdraft?

Can you tell us who it is that's chasing you for payment and who the original creditor is?

    Hi Spanish eyes,

You would be able to contact CCCS if the debt is an English debt. You would need to contact us on 0113 297 0126 as the ‘0800’ wouldn’t work.

  • Thank you for your note
The debt is for a credit card with AMERICAN EXPRESS.
The agency is based in Preston Lancashire.
We think that the debt is still with Amex and they are trying to recover it on their behalf. They say that Amercian Express refuse to stop the interest. I offered 25pounds for 3 months and then would call to review - they would not accepts this.

If that’s all you can afford based on you income and expenditure – stick to that. Do not feel pressured into paying them anymore.

Please, also, do not worry too much about any action that they 'threaten' you with. If you live in Spain, then they are unlikely to be able to take you to court, in the Spanish Courts, as it is a UK debt.
Even if they take you to the Courts in the UK, in your absence, any ruling made by that Court would only be applicable in the UK.

If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
