You probably need to deduct at least 1.5% from the projections to cover the charges

No. Its the complete opposite. Life assurance illustrations are gross of charges. So, if the amc was say 1.5% and the return after charges was 7% then the illustration projections would have to be 8.5% to match that.

Deducting the charges from the illustrative projections basically doubles the charges and makes the projections more inaccurate.

  • I rang SL today for a surrender form, the CSA said "do you know the surrender value?"
    I replied" Yes, 19,631"
She said, "Things have changed a little in the past couple of weeks, now it is 19,014"

A loss of £617, thats all I need.

If its a conventional with profits fund then the drop is due to the August interim bonus. If its unitised then it reflects market conditions. However, unitised plans that are not due to mature in the short term benefit from market conditions like this in the long term.
