  • Hey, don't give up. Perhaps list it on ebay, or perhaps there are more specialised auction websites?

Glad to be able to help. I think you need a specialist, not eBay, IMHO

It's not necessarily that easy to sell a painting privately. People buy through dealers and exhibitions much more readily because of the cachet of the dealer and the ambience of the show, and a good dealer can obtain a lot more for a picture than it would fetch on open sale or at auction (this is carried to extremes in New Bond Street where you can frequently find pictures for anything up to 20-50 times what the same items can be obtained for at auction).

The best step is to approach a reputable auctioneer for a saleroom valuation. But be prepared to be disappointed at what you are told. If the artist is collected then there may be a market, but for a contemporary artist without a following it is likely to be valued as a decorative object. And of course there are costs associated with the sale in terms of sellers premium (and the buyer will be paying a similar amount which will cap his or her top bid) and other costs, often 30% or higher of the realised amount.

So for a painting you think may be worth £3,000, you might well expect a saleroom valuation of maybe £800-900, of which you'd get maybe £6-700 after costs. Of course you could get more, but this is what happens most often.

Personally I would give it a go on ebay first but put a good reserve on it.

  • My parents have some paintings by someone whose name escapes me, when they wanted to know how much to insure them for they looked up the local branch of sothebys and went down for a valuation. I imagine they might be able to help you sell too. They have representatives all over the place. Here's the site in case it helps.
