Freelance work - different tax code?

I left my job in June to spend the summer doing work experience before i go back to post graduate studies in september. From April til June, I earned around £9,000, but was taxed about £3,500. (I think i am owed some tax back).

I am now doing some freelance work just to earn some money before I start my course but am only earning between £40-80 per week. I am being taxed at 20% as the company I am freelancing for have told me I need to sort out my own tax. Surely I should not be being taxed as I am earning so little... and will be earning next to nothing for the rest of the year.

What do I need to do to change my tax code?

Your statements do not add up. You are freelance, yet your 'employer' is deducting tax at 20% - but say you need to sort out your own tax. This is completely mad.
If you are truely freelance, they would pay you without deducting tax and you would self assess at the end of the year.
You need to ask your employer for a form P46 - sign this to say it is your only job. Then ring your tax office and ask them what info they need from you to put you on a proper cumulative code number. Your employer will then make the refund. However, if you are not going to be working for much longer, it might be easier to wait for your P45 and send the whole lot to your tax office and ask them to make the refund.
