As it happens, I have spoken to Citizens Advice who have advised that now is the best time for me to go to uni while I have access to so much help. Also, I have been accepted for a credit card with 0% balance transfers and my regular bank will let me have a student account so hey, I guess my rating isn't as bad as I originally thought and I'm not that useless after all.
Best of luck, hope it works out for you.- amassing0 -
Lokolo - I find your attitude absolutely disgusting. Having only just joined, one of the rules I've read is 'Pls be nice to all MoneySavers' yet anyone who can't get a part-time job or has their lifestyle funded by 'rich grandparent's' you have no sympathy for!
How can a single parent Mum of 2 possibly get a part time job and study at the same time?! I found it hard enough having a job and Uni let alone two children to care for.0 -
Thank you I would also just like to add that there is absolutely nothing savvy about letting someone else fund your lifestyle while you use the money you should be using to live on for something else. Its simply being lucky enough to be in a position to do so. Being good with money is learning how to budget with limited means and working your backside off to keep your children fed. I only hope Lokolo that one day, if your grandparents find themselves in a position where they need 24 hour nursing care when they are older, that you will kindly return their kindness and use your "hard saved" cash to pay for it.0

Yes, please re-read my post. Hence why I said 'Why are you going if you cannot afford to?'
There are many threads on this board with students complaining they have no money because they have not saved, nor got parttime jobs, and therefore I am no longer sympathetic to these people.
I had someone on my course who was an adult learner, she had 2 kids. We have a creche at university where she could take her children during the day and her parents would help look after them otherwise. She has not dropped out and she also has a part time job.
And I am being blunt, not rude. Simple as, you need to think about the situation and if you can't afford to go to university, don't go, thats what most people do.
And yes, why would I not use my hard saved cash for my grandparents?
And also, I do budget well, I have plenty of money from my own part time jobs as well and save an awful lot for when I am older and I want to have kids. That is what I have learnt from this site. But I have also learnt a lot of people get themselves into bad situations because they don't think about what they are doing.
[edit]
Also the first post implied that the OP was going to live off her overdraft throughout her university life which is not correct as she has explained. However I still stated, that if she cannot get a student account, she obviously has a bad credit rating so should really think about her financial position more and whether she can actually afford to.
And I am not replying anymore as you just seem to be trolling to want to hear 'yes you go to university, heres £5k'.0 -
Personally, after reading and re-reading your posts Lokolo...I still find you very rude and abrupt. Also, about 70% of the posts I've read with your name on I find in it something about your grandparents cash. I had a housemate at Uni and her parents were in a position to pay for her accomodation as she couldn't get a part time job with it being such a small town, yet she told us this once, not rammed it in our heads in every post.
If you are in such a good position financially, why are you still allowing them to pay for your student accomodation/tuition? Why don't you just let them enjoy their retirement, without funding you?
And as for this poor woman, would you rather she sat on benefits for the rest of her life, scrounging from the system, or actually want to do something with herself? Seeing the estate where I grew up, children becoming mothers quickly and make mistakes and end up in a lifetime of regret. This woman is wanting to put her life right, train to do something that is worthwhile and become someone. We should be applauding her, not criticising her for actually doing something with her life.
She only asked for a student account for the overdraft for emergencies, which is exactly what mine was there for and thousands of other students. If she feels she can afford to go, then good on her.0 -
Sorry if you find me rude, just trying to make sure OP doesn't make a mistake and drop out.
Thats because people actually wonder how I can put money in ISAs through student loan. Hence why I say about grandparents. Also, I have posted a lot on these forums, and most of them never mentioned even about me being a student, so don't be silly. My grandparents have a lot and a lot of money at that, I don't ask for the money and never have but they just send me it, I don't like to refuse (as would anyone?)
At what point did I say never go to university? I said, put it on hold, save some money and then go. My third post on this thread I said: "so why not leave it as I suggested, save up, then go back. Its better than going, dropping out in your first year because of money problems, and going back."
You say "if she feels as though she can go, she should". How would you like her to post in 6 months saying 'I have dropped out of unviersity because I couldn't afford it, now what?'?? Would you feel guilty then?
I would much rather she saves some money, make sure she knows how much she can spend etc. and then goes and completes the course. And she only said about overdraft for emergencies until later on in this thread.0 -
How long would it take so save up to go to university? Out of the league of most people - with fees themselves costing over £3k per year, plus the living costs - without any living costs - you would need at least 10k. A single mother on benefits will never be able to save up that amount of money.
It is also not as simple to get a part time job as you suspect - students are all looking for part time jobs to subsidise their meagre loans/grants (they have no choice) so there is great competition. My daughter did not succeed in getting a job last year in her first year at uni, despite getting plenty of interviews. The jobs were all given to the local people (no idea why, probably just coincidence) maybe they assumed that all Southerners were rich lol!!!! Anyhow, she has really struggled financially. This year she will have to apply to the Access to Learning Fund (perhaps the OP could apply there too to help out) at the same time as applying for jobs again.
The OP also did not imply that the overdraft would fund her through uni, to m it read that she wanted to get the best deal possible with the best overdraft to HELP her.
To the OP, go to the Access to Learning Fund and apply for a grant there - it is non refunable and so better than an overdraft, and you may find that you get more - do it early. Single parents are given priority. Good luck.0
