TESCO Wrong Price Incident?

Last night at Brooklands Tesco I bought some drinks for Xmas, totalling about £85 for 3 bottles of wine, 2 bottles of Champagne and a bottle of Port.

I went in with the idea that there was 10% off if you buy 6 or more bottles, however upon checking my receipt on the way out of the store I noticed only 5% had been taken off.

I told CS who walked with me to the wine section and pointed out a few signs up saying the discount was 5%, but there WAS a sign in front of the champagne that said 10% off all wines, including sparkling and fortified and there was no expiry date on the sign. I spent a lot of time deciding on champagne and probably hence why I was adamant there was a sign still saying 10% off.

The CS lady said she could only give me the missing 5% extra discount on the champagnes and not on the wines or the port because the offending sign was not displayed in front of either of these 2 sections.

So I was given £3 ish back from CS.

BUT,

1.) Should I have been entitled to the extra discount on all the wine purchases because of that one sign? I did argue this with CS but to no avail.

2.) Under their wrong price policy, should I have been entitled to a full refund PLUS keep the items? In which case, what is there I can do about it now?

I can't answer your questions, but I too was under the impression that you get 10% for 6 bottles of wine, and I made a special trip to Tesco Brooklands last Saturday to stock up. I forgot check my receipt, so will have to do that tonight.

The answer to both would appear to be yes.

What to do now, if the 10% sign is still there go back and ask to speak to the duty Manager. You may get lucky but often they're reluctant to deal with customers, as trying to defend the indefensible done by their staff is embarrassing for them.

If the sign has been removed you could still try the above but more difficult to prove your point.

It is likely the assistant did not understand that the items you had all fell within the definition on the sign, regardless of whether it was in front of all items or not!

    Good luck

I agree that it will be nigh on impossible to retrospectively claim anything back. I just wanted to gauge people's opinions on how far this policy might go.

I would agree it may be extremely difficult to get the discount on the whole shop, but in relation to the refund they provided on the champers, they have admitted a pricing error, hence you should have got a full refund for the champers and kept the goods - I think you could win that arguement retrospectively with store manager if you wanted to pursue it.

(You'd need the receipt and proof you actually got a further 5% off in your initial complaint)
