ok first of all I know you may all laugh at me, but I have a genuine problem.
I am currently looking for a job but I have never used a till in my life. i would love to work in high street shops e.g. Boots or clothing shops but I am afraid that I don't know how to work tills. I know they give you training, but what if I mess up? or what if i can't get to grips with the tills? I know you all may laugh but I can't exactly discuss my problem with a future empoyer coz they won't employ me full stop.
I would be really relieved if someone could tell me how long they take to train people to work tills and how they do it generally.
please could someone help me with my problem
p.s does anyone work in boots?

Don't worry, the tills practically do it all for you nowadays. You get prompts on the screen if you don't do the right thing.
I used to work in Boots, but it was thirteen years ago so things have changed since then! xGone ... or have I?0 -
you are right to be scared of tills- they can be nasty. one particularly vicious creature kept trying to take my hand off everytime it was opened/closed. luckily it was an antiquated machine on its last legs and a few noisy complaints to managers landed us with a nice shiny new touch screen. :j they look intimidating but are actually really simple to use. we used to keep little prompt sheets next to the tills for new starts incase they pressed the wrong button and got lost in a completely different section. it helps to make friends with the person in charge of over-riding transactions as they make any mistakes disappear.
just don't try to clean a touch screen while the computer is on!when the first cup of coffee tastes like washing up she knows she's losing it0 -
If you can use a PC, you can use a till. In fact you'll do most of it through sheer repetition without even realising your options.
I'd even go so far as to say, if you can use a cash machine, you can use a till.0 -
Would it help if you did some voluntary work for a charity shop for a few weeks? I used to run Oxfam shops (a string of them) and can testify that most Oxfam volunteers are terrified of tills, but pick them up very quickly (and you should be trained very patiently!) You will then be able to say you have till experienceEx board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

You've been watching too much Open All Hours, with Arkwright's till, haven't you?
I was a field engineer and one of the jobs was fixing tills and bank counter tills, both in major chain and local shops.
I was given little training on how to use them as such, just for testing, but it was dead easy to learn and put them in training mode and have a play; it was quite good fun, ringing things through, doing refunds and printing cheques (although my bank were less than impressed, but they had a laugh too, when I had to order a new cheque book, explaining where all my cheques had gone!).A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -
make sure you dont have to bend over / stretch to use it, as i got really sore back when doing the tills as Asda, as a nipper..
being left handed didnt help either.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0
