Wedding Dresses from Oxfam?

Has anyone any experience of using the Oxfam bridal stores? Their website says that the average cost of their dresses is £250 which is still a lot more than I have been hoping to spend! Has anyone got a nice dress from there for much less? What was your overall experience like?

Thanks guys!

Nicola

    Hi Jue's DD,

Am sure you could get cheaper .... if cost was an issue.

    Try local papers
    Ebay
    Sales (Debenhams, BHS, Monsoon etc.)
    Other charity shops
  • Just to let you know

I went to the Oxfam branch in Bracknell that has second hand dresses for sale and was fairly disappointed with the stock that they had in.

I thought that they would have a wide choice, but really there were only two racks and most of the dresses were from size 14 to size 18. The dresses were also not very modern so if you are looking for a modern dress I would suggest looking at ebay.

I thought that there would be quite a lot of dresses and they would be within 1 - 2 years old - but I couldn't see any that were that age. Also there were no samples there from wedding dress shops.

They were quite cheap from £75 but it really depends on what you are looking for and for £75 nowadays you can get a really good bargain in the sales or from ebay.

Hope this information helps - I wouldn't make a special trip to go to a store that stocks bridal dresses only if you are passing, nip in and have a look.!

I got mine from EBay. It cost £100 and had a matching tiara. It was gorgeous, and afterwards I sold it on EBay for £60.
It's probably doing the rounds of the country

Barnardo's also have some bridal shops (scroll down for locations other than Edinburgh), they are seconds and ex-display, not secondhand.

St Anne's hospice has some too - there is one in Cheadle near Manchester.

I was going to go and look there but after trying on in a 'proper' wedding dress shop I discovered that every dress in my size would need a slight alteration. This was included in the price at the bridal shop, so decided not to bother.

  • my friend sold hers on ebay for £200 it was brand new as she decided not to get married and it cost her £1000

check your local paper too there are always loads and sometimes brand new ones for £50.

There was a woman on tv that bought one off ebay for about £25 and they altered it to fit her size.
