CCJ and Capquest - help!

I have just discovered, while being vetted for a flat, that there is a CCJ against me from January 2007.
It relates to a Severn Trent account at a previous address that was jointly in mine and my flatmates name. We moved out, I gave ST my forwarding address. They sent me a final bill. I paid. Late, but in full. Then I moved again. I didn't give ST my new address because as far as I was concerned the account was closed, but I did leave it with the landlord, my former flatmates and the new occupant of the flat.

About four months ago I had a nice red letter from Capquest at my current address saying I owed £149 plus £60 charges to Severn Trent. I rang them and said I didn't. They said you'll have to pay anyway. I rang ST, who said they couldn't tell if the debt had been incurred after we left the address. To make it go away, we agreed to pay the bill but not the charges, as it was the first either of us knew about the debt and so couldn't see how it was fair that we'd racked up any charges. I wrote to ST and Capquest to lay out the situation.

Last week I learnt about the CCJ. Neither ST or Capquest mentioned it in any of the phonecalls I had with them. I never recieved any paperwork, not a default notice, not a summons, not a judgement. The CCJ is not on my housemate's record (he has just got a mortgage and had no trouble at all)

Is there anything I can do? I have spent the last two years clawing my way out of a vicious cycle of bank/loan/store card charged and I'm about a month away from clearing all my debts. The idea that it will all be in vain because of a CCJ I knew nothing about is heartbreaking so any advice is much appreciated...
