Right I've merged the other threads to make it easier and started this Foodie gift thread instead
These are what I have decided so far to make:
Sloe Gin - small bottles!
Fruit leathers
Jam
Chocolate covered Orange peel
Tomato Relish
Dried Tomato's in oil
Rasberry Vinegar (on husbands request!)
Garlic Oil
Rasberry vinegar Recipe- ever so slightly modified to avoid Copyright problems
for 1.5 litres
1 kilo of rasberries
600 ml cider or white wine vinegar
About 1 kg of granulated sugar - see recipe...
Either crush the rasberries in a large bowl or LIGHTY wizz in a blender - do not liquify.
Add the vinegar, cover and leave to steep for 5 days stirring when you pass.
Day 5 - strain using jelly bag or using a piece of muslin - leave to slowly drain over night.
Measure your liquid and for every 100 ml add 75 gr of granulated sugar - add both into a saucepan and gently bring to the boil. Keep stirring till all your sugar has dissolved. Leave to boil for about 10 minutes - remember to remove any scum that rises to keep the end product lovely and clear.
Remove from the hob and leave to cool - this should only be bottled when cooled - make sure you use sterilised bottles but as this is vinegar and sugar you shouldn't have any mold problems.
Use within 12 months.
You can replace the rasberries with other soft fruits
Anyone have any recipes for home made presents they want to share?
Oh and I made my Sloe gin last night with Sloes from last year I had hidden away in the freezer! Don't forget the Gin should be 40% proof

Jelly bag with stand - you CAN just use the bag and an upturned stool - or if you have a hook in your ceiling (well you might!!!!) then you could suspend it from there...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

I made this last christmas and it went down really well. The recipe is in Nigella's how to be a domestic goddess book.
500g cooking apples
1 medium onion
2 birds eye chilli's
250g demerera sugar
1tps allspice
1 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp salt
1 heaped tsp chopped fresh ginger
1 tsp turmeric
350ml cider vinegar
finely chop onion and roughly chop apple. Seed chillies and chop. Put all the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Cook over a medium heat for 30-40 mins until mixture thickens. Spoon into jars.
Makes about 1 ltr.0 -
Just found this recipe for mint jelly on Silver Spoon website - it uses apple juice instead of apples, so no need for straining in jelly bag. HTH.
Thanks, sounds good in principle and I'm sure would taste fine with juiced apples from our orchard, but I expect it would be cloudy jelly as the juice that comes out from our electric juicer is cloudy. Has anyone tried it or does anyone know how to clear the cloudiness?0 -
Hmmmm have you tried leaving the juice to stand for an hour and then syphoning off the clear liquid underneath? I remember my juicer was the same with apples but if you let it stand for a short while it'll seperate and you can either syphon or just carefully skim it
Have so far made sloe gin (another couple of weeks till I can filter it and use the sloes for chocolates yummy!) and half a portion of rasberry vinegar is sat in the kitchen. About to make equal amount of Blackberry vinegar once I find a container that won't stain
Must buy more normal sugar...
Also have wine making stuff - bought a kit to see if I can manage THAT and then I'll make blackberry wine once they start ripening...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
