    Its really simple.

If they can't click on the file and it open without any aggro, they'll just skip it and go on to the next applicants.

One of my mums friends daughter (17 years old) got a shock one day when she was watching one of my mums other friend sifting through some job applications. On the job advert it said to "apply in own handwriting". Every typed one went straight in the bin. The young lass said "Why are you doing that?" to which the reply was "It said to apply in own handwriting." "You can't do that" she responded to which she was met by the reply "If they can't even follow that simple instruction, how are they going to do anything else they're told?".
That 17 year old got a rude awakening to the reality of job application.
