this may make some of you 'nervous' financially speaking but may i suggest getting a weekly box scheme delivery?

the reason i suggest this is since i've started doing it my grocery bills have plummeted!

i'm in the shops about 80% less so very few impulse buys. i use public transport so not only to i save those fares but i also save my poor hands from the bags cutting into them, veg is heavy!

and you can easily budget. once you know how much you need to order from your company you can know that you'll always spend that much. then you work your other money around it. you can take weeks off if you need and it will get you eating better as well.

we've been discussing this on frugal genius uk and the general concensus is the same, buying the organic box saves most people money overall because they stay out of the shops more.

some places will also deliver milk and eggs. i can suggest that you try to get a local scheme vs a national one as you will get much less for you money with a national company. to give you an idea of what you can expect to pay...

East Coast Organics fruit and veg box (standard size) + 1/2 dozen organic free range eggs £16.30 delivered

includes 11 items for example 4lbs potatoes, 1.5lbs onions, 1.5lbs carrots, 6oz mushrooms, .75lb tomatoes, lettuce OR salad, Spinach OR Chard, Cauliflower OR Swede OR Cabbage, Leeks OR Celery OR Courgettes, Fennel OR Aubergine OR Cucumber, Garlic OR Pepper (rough guide only) PLUS apples, bananas, oranges or clementines, pears and kiwis and occasionally melons and soft fruit. PLUS 1/2 dozen organic free range eggs

I realise that shopping at lidl you can get food for less and if you're on a very strict budget then by all means, use lidl BUT it really does save me money and i'm loathe to stop my deliveries even when money is tight because then i'll be in the supermarket looking at all the stuff i can't afford which makes me want it more!

just an idea to throw out there, i thought it would be too expensive and balked at the prices but they really are very reasonable when you look at the big picture, plus it's healthier!

  • Maybe you could stock up with extra of the basics on your normal weeks. It is surprising how getting an extra tin etc mounts, and as you get more 4 week months than 5 you should do OK. I shop weekly myself, but have done the monthly thing in the past.
