Plain food for an ill person

I think this used to be called 'food for invalids' but that's a little non-pc lol. Just because someone's sick it doesn't mean they're not valid
Anyway as most of you know my OH is poorly and I've been told to give him plain, easy to digest food, and nothing spicy. Obviously I'd like the food to be as nutritious as possible as well. My complete repertoire of food for ill people is plain scrambled eggs and chicken soup. I know I could make lots of other soups too, or a risotto leaving all the rich ingredients out. I have some HM fish pie that might be suitable. Beyond that I'm stuck.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can cook him? Or, if there's a thread already and I've managed not to find it, could someone point me in the right direction?

When we were younger and had upset tums we used to get grilled chicken or pork chop, plain rice and peas! A spot of gravy sometimes too.
So I think a fairly plain chicken risotto is a good idea - but definitely avoid garlic and treat onion sparingly.
You could look up recipes for people on "elimination diets" for allergies as that tends to be pretty plain food to start with.Newlywed at the point I joined the forum... now newly separated0 -
When I was poorly a couple of years ago, my doctor told me not to have ANY fat  I had black coffee, water, chicken breast with salad, tuna flakes with salad, lots of veggies, it was boring.. but worth it. I cheated one night and had a cup of tea with a splash of milk - and promptly threw up  Other thoughts are ommelette, meat potatoes and veg, ham sandwich, salmon and rice.Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0

I was ill in Tunisia a few years ago and had a doctor called out. Once I could eat it was plain boiled rice. Couple of days on that and then it was boiled rice and a steak. Sounds extreme but I loved that steak.
My kids had E Coli on return from a Nigeria visit a few years ago and again it was plain boiled rice when they were able to eat. And the horrible rehydration sachets were a must, horrible tasting or not I'm afraid.
For general upsets, we always go down the rice route. DD's Asian friend drinks only the water that rice is cooked in on the first day after stomach upset and say this is how she was brought up. I really think Dave will be fine with not having a great choice of food. Rice, steamed fish, chicken, toast. It's the fluids you want to keep up I think and he'll soon be hungry and wanting more fancy food anyway.
You're doing a great job!

We all had tinned salmon with mashed potatoes and peas when we were poorly.
Funny how you get into a habit, I still do it now!

A quick and easy meal my mum used to make when we were poorly is a tin of soup with some boiled spuds in it. So maybe a tin of Heinz lentil and bacon plus some nice soft boiled spuds to bulk it up?
It's pretty easy and tasty and as long as you pick the right soup (no fish chowers or anything rich) - I think it will be plain and easy to digest.
Otherwise, my dr recommended plain rice when I had IBS (as wmf suggested above) or just plain steamed / boiled veg with a bit of gravy?
Hope you man feels better soon!0 -
Plainly cooked white fish is very digestible and nutritious. If serve it with boiled potatoes it looks a bit bland and will benefit from some colourful garnish. (Actually, if someone's unwell you need to take care with presentation and make things look appetising.)0

We always follow the 'eat what you feel like eating' philosophy and it has never caused any issues. I do believe that when we're ill, our bodies sort of crave what we need. Typically carbs I would say.
For the children, it starts with plain soft white bread cut into shapes! Grapes and peeled apples are also popular. And then bread and butter.
Hubbie likes chicken soup when he's ill, with fresh bread and butter.
I have heard that dairy products aren't recommended for stomach upsets.
I don't think I could stomach plain boiled rice at the best of times tbh. Although it is a childhood favourite with melted butter.0 -
White fish and plain bolied rice are best.
There is also the BRAT diet which is what I was told to give my baby after he'd been ill - banana, rice, apple (dessert, not cooking and stewed) and toast (dry). All of these are easy on the tummy.
Plenty of plain cooled boiled water, but if the person is finding water hard to keep down, give them ice cubes made from boiled water to suck.0
