Self Serve at Tescos!

Hi!

Went into my new Tesco Extra store yesterday and they have self serve tills, scanned my shopping and then had some money off coupons for products I hadnt bought. They were still deducted from my shopping and no one to give me weird looks. Excellent way to get money off shopping!:T

Never tried this in Sainsburys, so may work at their self serve tills!

Extremley worrying to see Tescos self serve tills dont require a pin number or signature when you swipe your debit or credit card, it just swipes and spits out your receipt. Apparently does this for shopping under £100. Last place I would lose my card is Tescos!

HTH someone!

  • I used a heap of newspaper coupons worth about 40p each at the self scanner. I don't use these ones that often at a normal checkout as the value is so small. Scanned about 20 of them and got £8 off my £20 shopping. Mum didn't think I was going to stop scanning them. Just used up what I had in my purse. My local Tesco's doesn't have the self scanners though so when I know I am going to another branch I stock up on the smaller coupons. Sometimes if you scan too many of them you need the check out assistant to scan her authorisation card, they don't bother checking what you're doing though. Very handy. :T

What do you do with the coupons once you have scanned them? Is there a place to put them?

I guess you can't take them away again as they claim back the money.

  • Yes there is a slot for the coupons to go into. Sometimes I've found they get stuck and you have to poke them in. Haven't used self scan for ages though.
    If I had known then what I know now . . .

Don't forget, if you use a lot of coupons or coupons of a high value, the till will lock till an operator manually over-rides it. Especially true since they just loaded some flash new software at Tesco Middlebrook. I try not to take the P and use roughly 10% of my shop if they are non-tesco vouchers ;) HTH

Spoke to a lady who seemed to be in charge at the checkouts last night, apparently Tescos from yesterday are only accepting one voucher per item for things that you haven't bought - assume that self service checkouts will be set like this too when they appear in out Tescos shortly. The coupon policy is apparently the new "official" policy.

So if you buy 100 items you can scan 100 non-related vouchers??? Sounds good to me - lol

Sounded a bit too good to be true to me too! Think she meant that you could only have one voucher per item that you weren't buying, such as one for Heinz beans rather than ten of them, she didn't seem to have an answer about how much of your shopping could be paid for in vouchers - will try and find out when I go shopping tomorrow! Here's hoping!

Yeah, you have to use different coupons as well if you don't buy the item.

This does happen at Middlebrook and someone always comes along and tells you off. At Leyland, if the till locks, they just unlock it from a distance and don't come over and stop you from using the coupons. Leyland and Chorley are much friendlier than Bolton, I find.

There is a new Tesco opening just up the road from me soon to replace a grotty old Co-Op. I can't wait to start my Tesco moneysaving challenge and am saving my coupons already!

I will now cross fingers that they have a self serve till. Thanks for this suggestion.
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!
