Really sorry to ask this because after searching I can see that this subject has been done to death
I'm quite a new baker so I want to make sure I get this right. Am planning on making banana muffins this afternoon but I'm reading conflicting advice over which flour to use!
This recipe says plain:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com:80/showpost.html?p=467687&postcount=90 (I know it's for bread, but it does say okay for muffins too) but this one says self-raising: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=687213&postcount=5
Utterley confused

I use plain with baking powder, or self raising without. I've never used self raising with baking powder as in recipe no 2, as it should already have a raising agent in, which combined with the eggs should be fine to give the muffins the necessary lift.

So, is the bicarb of soda the baking powder then?
And that's what makes them rise?
I'm SUCH a novice...... probably not safe to be in the kitchen really.....You can't control everything in life....... your hair was put on your head to remind you of that

No - they are different. This link explains it much better than I can though!

It is baking powder you need for the muffins though if you use plain flour IME.0
