I also lived on Barra as a child and started school there,i would say the age i went there was perfect (5)as i got used to the way of life easier,i think if i was older it would be more difficult.I grew to love the island and its people,so much so that when i came back to the mainland yrs later i became severely home sick for Barra. It holds a very special place in my heart, and i go back when i can.0

Like some of the other posters have said, it depends which island in the Western Isles you're thinking about?
I'm originally from the islands and moved back 2 years ago with my husband who's from Inverness. He loves it up here and is glad that we made the move.
A number of people have said to him "have you survived a winter yet?" So, the suggestion to rent a house and to come and try it for a few months of the year might not be a bad one, especially over the winter months. It's one thing in summer when it doesn't really get dark, but another kettle of fish in winter when it's been blowing a Force 9 - 10 for 4 days, the ferry hasn't sailed, so there are no fresh provisions and you've had a power cut for the last 24 hours. It might be worst case scenario, but at least have some idea of what could be ahead of you.
Have a look at the local Estate agents to see what's available to buy and to rent:
Hebridean Estate Agency - http://www.anderson-macarthur.com/
Western Isles Property - http://www.western-isles-property.co.uk/
Ken Macdonald & Co - http://www.kenmacdonaldproperties.co.uk/
Have a look on the Local authority website (Comhairle nan Eilean Siar) and it's a good pointer for information regarding the various parts of the islands as well as giving you an idea about schools, their location and other leisure activities (when available)
