    Hi everyone

I love pumpkin/squash seeds and when I cook them I'm painfully aware that I'm wasting good food when I throw out the insides.

Does anyone know a quick easy way to get rid of the shells/husks on them? Last year I sat and did them all by hand and it hurt my fingers and left them stained

Does anyone know how else I can get rid of their shells?

    Cheers

  • I usually add in dried store-bought pumpkin seeds when baking bread (tastes
    really good).
Given the number of pumpkins around just now, I am wondering how to turn the seeds from fresh pumpkins into ones suitable for use in baking.

Just leave 'em to dry out for a week ? Or dry them in a low oven, or what ?

    Any ideas ?? Thanks

I've dried mine out in the oven to eat as a snack, but I was coming on to ask whether people washed their seeds to get the fibres off (which is a nasty evil messy job!) or whether they'd fall off if you just roasted them with fibre attached.

However, failing to find the answer here, I found a zillion recipes for pumpkin seeds on RecipeZaar. Where generally people wash them, but a few just pull the fibres off.

So I guess you pays your money and you takes your choice!

I remember my granny washing them and laying them out on a cloth in the sun to dry...obviously this is not going to work mid-November. Ditto melon seeds, remove the husk when dried to reveal a surprisingly nutty treat...

There's an older thread with advice on pumpkin seeds that should help so I've added this thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.

An update: I'd stupidly started washing this latest batch before remembering I'd intended to come and ask you lot, but it was washing them which reminded me what a nasty evil messy job it was so I didn't do it very well. So I left them draining on kitchen paper for a couple of hours, then scraped them off onto a baking tray with oil and melted marge and some salt, and stuck them in the oven. They were still a bit damp (!) but they've roasted nicely in about 20 minutes. Very more-ish.

I'm hoping next time to pull off as much fibre as I can, then just bake 'em. If I remember not to wash them ...

And no, I have not de-hulled them, truly life is too short and I'm sure that adds to the flavour anyway!

PS DH has just come in from work (I know!) and asked what they are, he says they are delicious!

Once we've finished with our pumpkin [I will be composting it] I'd like to see if I can eat the seeds. How do you cook them please?
    Many thanks

    Hi Aril,

You can wash them then roast them in the oven, usually with a little salt.

This thread should help more: Pumpkin Seeds? I'll add your thread to it later to keep the suggestions together.

  • I rinsed mine in a colander, shook them dry, sprinkled them with worcestershire sauce & baked in the oven til they were brown & crunchy, I didn't hull them, they were yummy, casings and all.
