Wood stoves, biomass etc anyone installing this here??

Options
Having just made an idiot of myself on the NI board, raving on about scottish grants and all things associated with biomass energy I wondered if anyone in Scotland put in or thinking about putting in a wood burning stove/pellet/chip boiler?

Doing a project on it up in Orkney and be interesting to hear about other folks experiences??

Also thinking about trying to put one in at home - but still unsure.....

Has anyone much experience?

I would expect the cost of getting wood pellets to Orkney might be expensive. Do you have access to wood for logs?

I am in the process of putting a wood burning stove with back boiler in my home in Aberdeen. How large is your home as there seem to be very few large wood stoves with the capability of running more than 6-8 radiators. We have a very good suply of free wood in our garden and this makes the whole process very cost effective.

I am also combining this system with our present oil boiler. This again is not an easy job as you need a nutraliser (whatever that is) Am waiting to get a visit from a specialist plumber.

Wood pellets boilers need large storage areas usually sloped to allow for automated feeding. This seems be becoming very popular and thefore i expect the few companies manufacturing the pellets and wood chips to cash in making it more and more expensive.

  • yeah thanks for the reply - security of supply here is a big issue, the new house is rented am going to try and persuade the owner that looking into something is better than oil, there are oddly enough for orkney alot of trees, wood etc in the garden.

My project is looking at growing willow for biomass for chips or pellets - whilst interesting its an uphill battle at the moment with prices the way they are and most see it as far too long term a committment! Don't blame them really its very early stages here!

Keep me posted about the dual thing you talked about - I htink that might be the way for many folk here with an erratic supply.
