  • If it is direct family you could do worse than try the Salvation Army. I was at my wits end when I discovered this. They have very reasonable fees but if you are short of cash they will do it for free if you talk with them directly. No ties either with church stuff, they are just so helpful. Local branches everywhere, anyone will forward you to the right place.

Just found the Salvation Army page, the link is below:

Hope you find your relatives. If you click on the links it gives you information and advice on how to approach things, and also likely success rates.

The previously mentioned Mormon site is a good start. But, be warned even they are not 100% accurate as I have found discrepancies with my male line. I offered proof of their mistake but they were not prepared to change their information.

The Family Records Centre at Myddleton Street is THE place for Births, Marriages, Deaths and Census records with free access. One just has to pay for copying. I stay round the corner at the London School of Economics accommodation at Rosebery Avenue. It's under 30 pounds per night including fat boy's breakfast for a single room, sharing bathrooms.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ is a free site, but has limited records.

http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx for deceased WWI armed forces people.

There should also be a Mormon centre within striking distance and they will be very helpful and their services are free.

192.com is available as the UK info disk to use in most libraries - it started in around 1997 and covers phone books, electoral rolls and other listings across the country. This is just the general section, there are others including adoption, armed services, births marriages & deaths, people finding services and reunion sites.

    192.com
You can search the edited version of the electoral registers but you have to buy credits (or agree to sponsorship or surveys) to view the results.

The 1901 census is the last one made available to the public, as I remember that so many people tried to use the website it that it crashed. They don't release them for 100 years & The census is only done every 10 years.
