He has an offer at one of the big boarding schools already and is a natural boarder. We are also going to look at a day school. However releasing equity will make us very very comfortably off.

The only thing I'd say about that, from personal experience, is that I thought I've love boarding. So did my parents. And I absolutely and utterly loathed it. It's the kind of thing you can't be certain about until the time comes, I reckon.

Ditto - I used to catch a school coach in Blackheath to go to school in Dulwich. Coach picked us up at 7.10am, and we got back about 4.40pm.

Did you go to JAGS or Alleyns?!

BTW, the Nationwide tell me that I can effectively freeze my mortgage for 6 months. We are on a 5 year fixed rate. They will charge early repayment charges (approx £8k) but we will get this back once we find a property within that 6 months. Does that sound right to you? Checked with two different call agents and they both confirmed that is correct. You cannot have a mortgage without a property but you can go back to the mortgage after 6 months when you buy something.....

That's right. You won't have a mortgage, they'll just refund the fees if you go back to them on the same deal.

You clearly know your Dulwich schools!

We nearly knew each other, lol! I think we'd have been in the same year at school.

I got in to JAGS but went to Old Palace in Croydon, of all places, instead.

  • My mother went to Croydon High (after an awful lot of other places, her parents moved around a lot) but Croydon wasn't that handy for us.

Don't worry, you weren't missing out!

It was the circuit boards in the CDT room at open evening at Old Palace that swung it for me. My mum wasn't really getting a say after that. :o (I think I was really given the choice between the two after she'd dismissed everything else but at the time I was really proud of myself)

The girls at Croydon High got to wear really short skirts while we had to wear massively long brown box pleated numbers :wall: I was so jealous of my friend and we met after we'd left school!

I was almost wondering if this was a wind up but the OP sounds sincere enough?

How on earth can a couple selling a £1.2million house, who both "earn way above the national average" - be worried about £500 HIP fee??? It's .04% of the asking price.....?

    Kingkano,

Not worried about the HIP and losing £500 should we not go ahead and sell but from what I can gather NO ONE takes any notice of HIPS and it does annoy me that Labour comes up with this crackpot ideas and expects us to pay for them. However £500 is £500. I would rather spend this money on a nice weekend in Paris then pay something that is complusory but seemingly worthless........
