yellow split peas and other "dried" questions

Please can anyone tell me if I have to soak these before cooking and if not, how long do I cook them for (in soup for example)?
Also, I have yellow split peas, marrowfat peas, split red lentils, pearl barley and broth mix - all with best buy dates of Feb 2008
. I'm guessing they will be fine to use but how long for? Don't really feel like soup in August - will it be safe to still be using them in Winter? - and how would I know if they had gone past their best since they are dried?
Thanks for any help - this will teach me not to look right to the back of cupboards in future :o:rotfl:

On my packet of yellow split peas it says to soak for 30 mins before use.
I'd eat the other if they were dried - I think dried food is like canned and I'd eat it a few years out of date probably as long as they didnt smell funny or anything!Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -
They will be fine. As they get older they may just take longer to cook.0

I'm pretty sure you need to soak them for a wee while before you cook them.
They will be fine to eat, and for a good while yet
