Hi all,
Im new to the forum and only found this fab site a while back.
I am in round £10,000 debt and struggling to cope with repayments.
The worst thing about my situation however, is the fact that it is stopping me get the job of my dreams...
I have got very depressed by my situation and find it very stressful dealing with creditors.
Has anyone else had problems getting a job because of debt?

Hello
I have never had problems getting a job because of debt, I understand that most comapnies are now doing credit searches especially if you work in finance.
But you have done the hardest part and have started to put things right so you are on the right track!! :T Martins budget planner will help you to see where you are month to month and week to week.
You may not be able to do things like the credit card shuffle if your credit is bad but have you tried contact your creditrs to see if they will come to an agreement? Also consider an administration order where an agreement is made through the courts and as long as you make your agreed payments they cant touch or contact you. However an admin order does mess up your credit if it is not already.
I also read somewhere on this site that most creditors will accept 20% off the debt so dont pay the whole amount if you dont have to....
Remember to stand your ground and dont over commit to payments that you cant make. It iwll men that you will have to discsipline yourself and get rid of some of those little luxuries. I had to do the same and realised that I didnt need those luxuries after all.
Stick at it, remember you have done the hardest part already and that is facing the problem which you have done.:DMFWB

whether debt affects your chances of get a job depends on the job you're seeking. even if you get a job ccjs and the like can also result in disciplinary action being taken in some cases and employer asking to see some of your personal financial records- this is particularly when your job includes managing company's/customers' money. the reason- if you can't handle your own, you can't be trusted handling theirs' and your actions are bringing organisation into disrepute. if your mind is on debt it will affect your chances anyway because you're likely to be stressed, less focused and less attentive to other matters. you may also be less efficient- sleepless nights because of worry. sort out the cause- i.e. get out of debt. first of all post full statement of affairs - incomings and outgoings and the chances are people on this forum will save you money which you then target towards the debt. in the past few months i've helped lots of people get out of debt- it's not that hard. people sometimes just need to be shown the route out of the tunnel/darkness to the light- once they're on route, they're unstoppable and yes during parts of the journey you will feel cheesed off and fed up- it's worth it in the end!.0

Hi jennifuffle,
Sorry that things aren't going too well for you at the moment. Have you got copies of your credit files to see how much longer the defaults are on for? Are they recent? I'm also very sorry to hear about you losing a baby, I've been through the same and can empathise with you. Take care xMortgage-free wannabe!0 -
I was unaware that some job applications require a credit check. I think that's so unfair. How does the state of your finances affect your work?2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I did get a copy of my credit file and spotted defaults.. Yep, last year! Grrrrr!
Not too sure how long they take to come off your credit file, but police said it may take up to 5 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
You should probably seek help from one of the free debt services mantioned by Martin on this website. They will help you by getting your creditors to accept realistic payments from you. It will also help you to have someone friendly on you side.
Good luck, and visit this site often for advice.0
