Smelly book

I hope someone can help. Have just come back from a local charity shop and bought my DD2 a gorgeous hard backed book of all the Mr Men stories, really lovely and only 49p! Bargain!
The thing is it stinks, kind of a combination of ciggie smoke and that musty smell books get, I didnt notice the smell in the shop as I was so excited about getting a bargain!
Any ideas how I can get the smell out? I cant put the book in the garden for some fresh air as it is chucking it down here, and I dont really want to put it in her bedroom with her other books until the smell has gone!

If you have a conditioner sheet for washing machines like Bounce or whatever (bet you don't as you are in the OS board!) then put the sheet a ziplock bag with the book and leave for a week or two. If not, I'd try putting some lavender oil or similar on a tissue and put in a ziplock bag.
Actually I bet some bicarb lobbed in there as well would help absorb the odours.0 -
was going to suggest bicarb too! I coolect antiquarian books and if one is whiffy I put it in a lidded plastic box with an open tub of bicarb. It doesn't take long - a few days - though I normally just leave it until I remember it's there!0

I would give the outside a good wipe with a damp cloth and then rub a little talc onto it to get rid of most of the ciggie smell. Bounce sheets cut up and put every so far will do a lot to improve the smell of the pages.
I never thought of bicarb, but that's a good idea too.
