Hello i was wondering if some one could answer 2 questions which i have.
ive been working for a hotel for the past 11years and next year i may have to take 6months off to take a role in a film does anyone know if im entitled to 6 month unpaid leave as im contracted.I dont want to quit my job incase i dotnt get another job.I dont want my boss to fob me off,
Also does anyone know when you work in a film and they pay you a certain amount is that at the end?or if you get paid weekly just thinking with bills ect.
Thanks

Can you clarify what you mean by 6 months unpaid leave as I'm contracted?
If there is a clause in your contract that offers unpaid leave after a certain length of service, and there are no conditions attached which exclude you, then yes you are entitled.
If you mean you are a contractor, then as with every other type of worker there is no requirement for an employer to hold a job open for someone for any length of time unless there is a statutory or contractual requirement to (eg maternity).
Good luck with the film role.0 -

Sounds like you are relying on goodwill then. Some companies do offer "Sabbaticals" after a certain length of service. (Sadly I've never worked for one) There is no requirement for an employer to allow this kind of leave.
Who would do your job if you weren't there? Perhaps if you could propose a solution to your manager your request might be better received.0 -
You're working for a hotel, and you're hoping they'll hold your job open for 6 months while you go off and do something completely different?

Sorry, but unless you can give them some compelling reason WHY they should do this, and some sound explanation of WHY it would make sense to get a temp in to cover you rather than just fill the job permanently, I think you are going to have to take the risk and resign! cazziebo's question of who would do your job if you weren't there is a very good one, and you DON'T want them to think they don't need you!
However, my understanding is that staff turnover in hotels can be quite rapid, so presumably a) there's a chance you'd be able to reapply for your old or a similar job when you got back and b) there would be vacancies elsewhere.
Plus you might be offered further film work!
Nothing to stop you ASKING, if the above sounds a bit negative, but very few employers give unpaid leave as a right, and even fewer give as much as six months.Signature removed for peace of mind0
