if you think hes charging too much ask around in the other private practices in your area to compare. in the larger city centres you can expect to pay a lot more than in towns. just a thought;)

Thanks alison - ideally I'd prefer to be nhs but if needs must then I'd have to pay the amount charged I suppose. Our other dentists in the larger areas are a 40 mile round trip for me and in the smaller towns I think they're full and taking no more nhs patients.
Still, I'll ask around and see what I can find out.

just remember that cheaper doesnt mean its better, or that the other dentist is ripping you off. also, its much important to have a dentist you can trust, then one that charges £5 for a check-up! :D

I really don't like the 'whatprice' website for dental things. Itcan be quite misleading.

Just on the page you quotefor example, it has apicectomies down as band 3 198 quid treatment.

    It isn't.

If, by any miracle, you ever persuade an NHS dentist todo an apicectomy, it would be a Band 2 44 quid treatment.

There are many other errors on that page in explainations, but it would take me too long to go into them all.

Hi Toothsmith. As a member of whatprice.co.uk would you be able to tell us some of the errors on the page? The NHS dental policy is pretty unclear at times! We'll change the claim the apicectomy is a band 3 procedure - should we point out that it is very hard to get done on the NHS?

    I've PM'd you ajwt.

You think the NHS policy is unclear!!?? You should try working within it!!!! ;)

Apicectomies aren't hard to get done on the NHS, but most dentists would refer them into a hospital oral surgery department, where, being secondary care, they are 'free at the point of delivery'.

A lot of dentists used to do apicectomies themselves, when it attracted it's own fee. But now it's all in with the Band 2 charge, I doubt any dentist would do them any more.

It would be done in private practice though, if the dentist was interested and skilled in doing them.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
