As soon as I seem to get my head round one bit of technology, something else comes along and baffles me.
I've just gone over to a laptop from my old PC. This machine like most modern ones is wifi, but as yet, I still connect via the ethernet cable. My aim is to get a wifi router and have freedom to move the laptop round the house.
Tonight I was presented with a succession of windows, asking me how I wanted to be connected home, work or park (symbols), I clicked on home, then I was told I was being connected via a belkin something or other, then via my ISP (TT)
It was then that I noticed the wifi button was illuminated. This must have been pressed accidently.
1) will that matter?, it's off now.
2) if I did have a wifi router, is that what I do, press that button and off I go?
3) if so, should the ethernet cable rj45 be removed?

well.. it looks like that you connected to one of your neighbours belkin wireless routers... belkin are notorious to have no wireless security as standard..
1 - no it won't batter
2 - might be a little more complex... as in type in a password, as you should secure your network wirelessly
3 - if you did go wireless, there i no need for the cable, however, it can be useful to keep it available to diagnose things, if your wireless goes wrong..

I noticed when I logged on today, the wifi light button was on so I pressed it off. Seemingly that happens every time, giving the user the choice of cable/wifi, would that be right? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. sounds about right... my laptop, i click an icon, and can turn wifi off, there isn't a physical button...
the main reason you can turn wifi off, is to save battery power, especially when it isn't being used!

1. Also turn Bluetooth of when not in use, for the same reason.
2. Your Internet is likely to be faster by Ethernet cable than by wireless.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.
