I believe that you can get them lasered or a type of nitrogen solution can also be used. I have a relation who had the latter method done very successfully.
To halt any more appearing, always apply a broad spectrum sunblock (that means a high SPF AND at least 4 UVA stars on the sun protection bottle) Apply 20 or more minutes before going outdoors, remembering to reapply frequently or any time your skin gets wet. It doesn't have to appear or feel sunny for the UV rays to affect your skin.
Remember that whilst vitamin D unfortunately cannot penetrate glass, UV rays can. So this necessitates taking care to protect your skin whilst indoors and when driving too.
Hope that helps.
P.S: If you're covering a large expanse of skin with sun protection, ensure that you're also getting enough vitamin D through supplementation or judiciously expose non age-spotted skin to the sun without protection for 15-30 minutes a day before applying protection.0 -
Before using chemicals or laser treatment, which IMHO sounds a bit radical, perhaps try something less invasive like Bio Oil which works for me, or a good old fashioned remedy like rubbing with the flesh of a lemon might help over time.0

The relative I knew who had the nitrogen treatment, chose that option because she had tried all manner of potions and lotions over the years and was really quite distressed by her age spots, particularly as many people thought that she was younger than she was actually was. It was only her hands that gave her away. So for her, the expense of having them treated was immeasurably worth it in terms of her self esteem and confidence.
Cheaper options could certainly be tried before turning to more expensive medical treatments, if the OP has the time to wait and see if they're lucky enough to have an effect. It's all a matter of the degree of distress they're causing, the timespan they're willing to wait for them to disappear and the certainty of the cure being offered.
It's horses for courses, some lemon juice and bio-oil can't do any harm but sun protection is vital to prevent more from appearing.0 -
I don't think that Bio-Oil will do much for age spots. The lemon juice idea is interesting. There is evidence that vitamin C can lighten the skin so it might work - but I have never seen any actual evidence.
The sunscreen idea is sound, but if you already have them it is obviously too late and codswallop has proposed a very tough regime to follow.Student of the science of beauty0 -
beautyscientist, I don't think that slapping on a broad spectrum sunscreen is such a 'very tough regime' to follow. People apply moisturiser all the time without thinking about it.
There has been some dermatological research that's demonstrated that skin that's protected is able to repair itself more effectively than having to fight on the protection front too. Age spots are a tough condition to get rid off and if you've got age spots, it's hard enough without having to worry about getting more.
There are some great 2 for 1 sunscreen promotions on offer at the moment so it's a perfect time to stock up and put a bottle in a handbag, by the kitchen sink, in the bathroom etc. Once you get into the habit of protecting your skin, it isn't hard at all.
I have read and heard of other alternatives that are reputed to work too but I would rather pass on the recommendations of what a dermatologist has told my relative rather than offering 'maybe' remedies that might waste the OP's money. Although I can post those too if the OP (bottoms) is willing to experiment for a while, without certainty of eradication.
All beauty maintenance unfortunately requires, at the very least, dedication. The French phrase 'Il fait souffrir pour etre belle' wasn't coined for nothing0 -
I recently read in a magazine that rubbing castor oil every night on the age stops helps to fade them.. not tried though.0

In my experience only Bio Oil has faded some previously quite obvious age spots on the backs of my hands - they are now almost undetectable. As codswallop says it takes perseverance but integrated it into a daily routine it takes no more than a few seconds. It works for me so I'm happy to go on using it0 -
Hi, rubbing on vinger helps deminish the brown spots0

I got them last year on my cheeks - same place as where I had used a prescription acne treatment the year before! Mine have now more or less gone. I've been using SPF50 (even when it's cloudy) which has helped stop more appearing and, strangely enough, since I started using rosehip oil under my moisturiser at night, they seem to have really diminished. They just look like large freckles now, as opposed to big brown dirty looking patches! Haven't used any glycolic products, or micro-dermabrasion creams btw.0

I rub a diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide (bought as antiseptic/mouthwash) from chemists (82p) on my hands to fade them. It works for me.0
