Bulk Buying Fruit and Veg...

I was just reading in John Yeomans 'Self Reliance' which Fife Flyer loaned to me (Thanks Fife Flyer happy0099.gif) about setting up a 'mini' co-operative for bulk buying stuff, and I was wondering about the practicalities of taking an early morning trip to New Covent Garden for a fruit and veggie shop to split between some of the strapped for cash family and friends. (New Cov. Gdn is a shortish drive from me at 3am!)

Has anyone ever done this??? Is there actually a saving to be made?

I was looking today at a local store that is selling 5K boxes of tomatoes for £2.99 (Penge Food Stores in Penge, if you are interested, and I've already been buying these and splitting them with a neighbour or my Daughter) and I wondered if they were actually making a profit on them at that price, in which case an 'expedition' to NCG would almost certainly be worth while occassionally. I was thinking that you could safely bulk buy onions, potatoes, carrots and other things that ordinarily would last the winter....as well as some seasonal stuff like toms, and fruit.

Also does anyone know if you need a trade pass of some kind??? John Yeomans suggests that you make yourself some home caterers paperwork, but as far as I can see from the website, you can just walk in and buy whole boxes? Also is there any parking???

Interested to hear your thoughts???

Regards

Kate
